Hey all
I've recently been introduced to the kayak fishing world and am presently looking for a sea going yak for further adventures. I am also a Coast Guard licensed charter boat operator out of Garibaldi Oregon and I'm looking to combine the two sports. I'm basically looking for info on how to make this happen. I took a couple of experienced hands out on my charter boat last year acting as the mother ship and we loaded up the yaks and hauled them offshore for a tuna trip. What a hoot! Nothing like going full stealth mode sneaking up on jumping albacore. Anyway, if anyone is interested next summer in a trip like this and showing me the ropes please get in touch. We can work out something fun. Also any info on how to find/purchase a used kayak for this purpose and what to look for or avoid, I'm all ears.

Welcome to the site! Any idea what you're looking to spend on the new boat? You can figure a little over 1000 for a new paddled boat and about 1900 for a peddle driven Hobie. I believe you saw both in action that day. Next Adventure in Portland is always a great spot to start looking.

Mike, you don't know how many people you just made happy.  We did the tuna/kayak/charter a couple years ago, but haven't been able to find a boat to do it since.  I think there is some pent up demand.  Got any pictures of your albacore mothership adventure?

Welcome.. Looks like you are fishing an Ed Wing 23?  I'd guess two to three yaks would be your max with gear and ice?  Craigslist would be your best bet for finding your first yak unless you're ok just buying retail.  For a straight tuna yak I'd go Hobie Revolution.  Fast, compact, and stable.  I went on the first mothership tuna trip Pole Pole mentioned and I'm at the coast a bunch.  Happy to drive over from Netarts and talk shop/answer questions etc. anytime.

Nice!  I was slated to go on the second albacore trip that got cancelled due to weather.  I'd love to help with this!

Welcome, Mike. With that screen name, I was sure we'd added another Alaskan to the forum. Do you have some connection to the Kenai River or Peninsula?

Welcome Mike! There are tons of options out there for you. Picking one out is the fun part, followed by the REALLY fun part, customizing it. :)

Hadn't really thought about the pricing yet, have some details to work out (fabricating a better way to fasten the kayaks to the roof etc.)  Wife unit reminded me to check with my charter insurance agent to make sure this is acceptable.  I'm all about keeping it reasonable.
Yep, 23 Edwing, ugly as can be, not a show dog but a hunter.
akgirl, had a place near Ninilchik several yrs back.
I've been watching CL, thanks for the recommendations all

Once you figure out your insurance piece if you could post some pricing ballparks it would be very helpful. I know I'd be interested.

After my first (non-yak) tuna charter with my grandson out of Depoe Bay last summer this has been a dream of mine. Count me in!
