Took a drive yesterday AM to check out a local yak fishing spot, surf was a no go but I had an itch to just watch the swells and drink a cup of coffee.  Area normally has its fair share of big fur bags (one of the handful of places where big bulls have hassled me) but I was surprised by how many had hauled out on the rock and how far up the face they venture.

Dang you guys who post pics of fishing spots I don't recognize! (But don't stop posting!) It always causes me to fire up Google Earth and start searching. Spent most of my lunch time finding and confirming the sea lion condo. Of course, that pales in comparison to the amount of time I spent searching for the in-town launch point that Spot used in his salmon fishing seminar a few months back. (I think I found that one, too.)

I don't like to ask guys I don't know well to give up that kind of info, and it is also fun for me to do the research. I have always loved maps, and Google Earth is pure candy for me. I can and do waste hours looking around on it.

Hmmmm ... interesting name.

Begs the question: Where those naming rocks really bad at marine mammal identification or are the big fur bags that big of bullies that they took over someone else's rock?

Correct me if I'm wrong on this one, but I think it's Sea Lion Rock, which is right near the pictured rock.  Sea Lion Rock actually... sort of... at the right viewing angle.... could pass for the shape of a sea lion.  So the grouping of rocks near it fall under the name too.

No - it's Seal Rock. Sea Lion Rock is 30 miles north.

Aaahhhh.  That makes sense.  That's where I originally thought it was, but then thought it was up by Ecola for some reason.
On a related note, there are too many rocks on the coast that are named after pinnipeds.
