Today LingBanger, Wobbler, Noah and Jammer took a young hero, Wounded Warrior Kevin, out on the Willamette and got him into a mess of Sturgeon! He must have landed 6-8 nice ones thanks to the generous guiding skills of our NWKA team:

Check out the updated FaceBook Page for HOW-PDX:

http://www.facebook.com/HeroesOnTheWaterPortlandOr (please "like" our photo album).

Noah provided the kayak, paddle and rod, Jake at Next Adventure loaned him a dry suit, Jammer dealt out his Sturgeon Mojo and Steve and Anthony also shared their skills and gear. Afterwards they celebrated with some dinner in Lake Oswego. Sadly, I missed the fun since I was off on my other passion, tennis.

Hopefully, we'll be getting Kevin on some Steelhead on Monday drifting the Sandy.

Thanks to our HOW leaders for stepping up big time to make this a very special day for our Hero.

That was a lot of fun. My hat's way off to Kevin. This guy is as tough as nails. The kids been through a heck of a lot more then most of us as kids and to find a better life, joins the military at a young age. He works his way up into the position of becoming a bomb technician to help save others. Now that's some crazy shit! This guys was as cool and collective as it gets. The reward that I found from this was seeing him smile from ear to ear, sitting in a kayak with friends, on a sunny day in Oregon. I was so glad I was able to make it out and look forword to helping again in the very near future. Great job to Noah, Wobbler, Lingbanger and Islandhoppa for getting our Portland branch rollin.

Thanks for all the good words, guys, and especially to PolePole for putting up the Pic of the month! Super sweet! Kevin is really one amazing guy, please welcome him to the forum as "RedWire", a nod to his service as an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) expert who served in both Iraq and Afganistan. Really look forward to lots more fishing with him.

Most of us are not vets. Does that somehow disqualify us from trying to give something back to a group of deserving people? I think not but if you'd like to discuss our qualifications please do so over PM.

PM is for those that lack discussion in an open forum,  I see issues here, are you VETTED?

hey man there a few of us vets that help out with HOW. I don't really understand what your purpose is with your comments. Is it that these guys who run around wasting a lot of there time and money and energy really shouldnt do so because they are not veterans themselves. They shouldn't give back to, and support soldiers and veterans maybe because they don't understand. Maybe that's the reason they do do it to give some guys something else to focus their minds and bodies on. A lot of these guys put in the effort because it does give vets a way to heal and an outlet.

Keep your comments to yourself,
Anthony

Seaslug - you are sounding like a jerk. I'm sure you aren't actually a jerk, but the tone comes off as really disrespectful towards guys that are just trying to help and guys who do and have served. Is you question regarding  participants, volunteers or leaders?  That would provide some clarity for your question.
