Should I persue the charter boat here in Bandon anymore or is this not what everyone is looking for? I will ask more questions if anyone has anymore. I think this boat would work well. It does not have the yak storage that the Black Pearl has but they would be willing for us to get creative. And the two days at sea would not work. It would be a good price for everyone according to the skipper. I think he like the idea of kayaks tuna fishing! Zac

Sorry Zac,

Didn't mean to hijack your thread. Your daytrip sounds like the lick! (if your not a Nor Cal girly mon!*) The price is right and I'm sure you could rustle up a crew from the NWKA. I'm in if you give me notice (I've got a good amount of WAF built up) and I'm pretty sure Allen would be too if his schedule doesn't bite him in the azz.

we still got plenty of time to figure it out. What about the dinghy support? and that door seems a bit high off the water.
See ya on the water..

I'm all over a NW mothership trip.  Just have to make sure it doesn't conflict with Moutcha or our derby this summer.

I will fish a tuna mothership this summer ... somewhere on the west coast ... not sure where yet.  But I'll be working hard to make sure this happens.  It's at the absolute top of my list.

SCP, keep proposing.  That boat looks nice and I think we can make it happen.  We just have some logistics to work through.  If we can solve where to put the kayaks and an good way to launch 'em, that boat would be nice.  A ladder is key, we need that for sure.

I've been on a couple offshore mothership trips, they are really fun. I have also been on many tuna trips, both here in Oregon and off of Baja when the albacore come in from the open ocean, I have thought about albies off the Oregon coast since they are only 20-30 miles out as opposed to 70-100 miles or more off of Baja.
A few observations;
The charter boats around here seem to average about 50', that size boat may only be able to carry a few kayaks without a rack. Also, without a "swim deck" at the rear of the boat, getting in and out of the kayaks will be difficult and possibly dangerous.
It is most likely the ocean conditions off the Oregon coast would be challenging, at best, for a kayak. Trolling at even 3-4 knots would be difficult. Perhaps the kayaks could fish live bait while the mothership trolls a spread of tuna feathers to draw the fish to the kayaks. Albacore swim fast, it is unlikely kayaks could keep up with them, loading and unloading kayaks would be time consuming, the school of albies might be long gone before the kayaks are in the water.
When to go? My favorite time is the end of August when there is no full moon.
You can check out some albacore fishing and kayak mothership fishing via the links in my sig. I will try to put up photos and videos of our most recent albacore fishing trip out of Newport, OR as soon as I can.
