That's a great find Craig!

Anyone know if the LCD backpack drains batteries faster or slower than using a smartphone/bluetooth connection instead?

The LCD backpack drains your battery fast. I would use the bluetooth/smartphone app is then your not drawing off your camera's battery. Your phone/tablet will run off its own battery.

that is true, the LCD backpack uses energy however once you get things framed and start shooting, there is a button on the side of the LCD pack that turns it off...

Ended up with a GoPro black Friday night.  Got the software updated and the batteries all set for our trip to Astoria that night.  Used it Sunday for the first time at High Life Adventures (zip lines) in Astoria/Warrenton.

The App was really easy to use.  There is some delay in getting a preview screen to come up, but not too bad, and the app just plain failed on me 2 or 3 times, but I used it probably 50 times and a quick restart of the app usually fixed it.  Had to restart my phone and the gopro one time to make it work.

Battery held up with about 35 minutes of video recorded and on standby with the wifi running for the remainder of the 2+ hour outing.  Glad I picked up an extra.

Video quality is incredible. Extremely sharp, smooth flowing images, even with a water impact.

Now I have to figure out how to edit them.  Can't seem to get windows movie maker or the app from GoPro to cut out sections from the middle of videos.  Uploading a ~7 minute video at 1080p 30fps is somewhat daunting.

Like I said, I don't have the editing down yet.

Congrats on the Hero. I understand the Black records stunning video. Regarding the SD cards, look at the write speed, not necessarily the card rating. I like the SanDisk Extreme and Ultra, usually good deals on Amazon. Don't go cheap  on the cards - you only get one chance to record a memory. Also, you might play with 720 at 60fps for slow motion and try an inexpensive lav microphone for improved audio.

I picked up a 64 gig SanDisc class 10 Ultra.  Takes really great video and a picture every 5 seconds.

I haven't used a card that large but my SanDisk cards have all been solid. Look forward to see some vids.

Nice - Those Hero Blacks capture nice video. Somebody should put a kayak zip line on the Willamette.

Lee I use AVS4you.  It was I think a $40 download and I'm pretty happy with it, but I know there are better, more expensive versions out there.  What's the name of that zip line place?
