I visited my favorite fishin hole last weekend, and limited out on halibut 2 days in a row (thats a first for me in the yak).  Didn't know if anyone wanted to join me this weekend for some freezer filling......

Or a change of pace in Seward?

My on water time might be limited in June. But I was tempted to run to Seward to

A) see if I can catch sockeyes trolling.
B) snag them with use of sonar and positioning potentially available from a kayak. But I'm not a huge fan of snagging (yea it's legal and the standard method for this location)...just fresh sockeyes to eat!
C) see if any big halibut are chasing the first substantial salmon run.

Hard not to keep hitting the inlet with results like that though!!!!! Nice score!!!

I have seen the videos of guys snagging Sockeyes. It's hard for me too wrap my head around that being legal and accepted. What is the reasoning behind allowing snagging?

Sockeyes are very much considered a food fish.  We are allowed to even dipnet them.  The conventional wisdom (which I think is wrong) is that sockeye don't bite.  This is especially true in the Kenai River where it is fairly silty and the accepted method of "sportfishing" them is lining/flossing them.

That's why A is to pioneer a "willing bite" fishery here in Alaska much like the Lake Washington fishery or the commercial troll fishery in BC.

The following video isn't very sporting either but A) It's a blast!  and B) More importantly it allows the residence of Alaska to stock up on salmon.  The limit is 25 per head of household and an additional 10 fish for every additional member of the household.  So a family of four can take 55 in the dipnet fishery.  It sure tkaes the "meat fishing" pressure off and allows for a more relaxing fishing experience all the other times of the year...other than hte halbit!  Got to have some white meat too!!!

Nothing a car wash can't fix.  Makes for a decent filet table too

Nice buts there, Kenai_Guy!  As the weekend nears, I'll let you know whether I can join in on the fun. I'd like to.

I heard the wind laid down around noon on Saturday... water looks nice in the background.

I had to brave through 4-6 inch surf and massive winds up to 5 mph.  It was horrible......I mean staring at the reflection of the mountains in the cook inlet was awful

It's early but weather looks good everywhere!!!!

I'm leaning Seward if I can get out. I'll have to convince someone that unpacked boxes that have been in storage for a year can stay that way. But as usual, she tends to have a more rationale and better planning skills than I!

I can't make it this weekend. I have to wine and dine the wife in celebration of our 10th anniversary and grease the wheels of future fishing trips!

I think it's one of the best fishing investments you will ever make. Are you getting a drysuit for her to celebrate the occasion??? I know you have an extra ride!!!!

I'm still struggling to find time this weekend.  It's going to be the same battle every weekend in June.  Just when ya think its all getting back to normal...NOT!

So Kenai_guy's halibut landings are hard to pass up!  But I also know that I can catch halibut all the way through September though right now is the BEST time for shallow water decent size halibut.

I got an invite to do some shrimping off a powerboat out of Whittier.  I am going to take them up on that for a day to get some shrimp and to show these guys how to catch real fish.  They are so focused on shrimp that they do their shrimping thing and but mainly just sit around and jig up rockfish all day while their pots soak.  Can't blame them, the past two years their shrimp count has been something on the order of 7,000 shrimp per season.  And yes, they go through it all.  I think they are on their last few quart ziplock bags.

I've committed to the editor of Alaska Outdoor Journal that if I go out this weekend on my kayak, I will spend some try trolling bare hooks around resurrection bay in hopes that I can emulate the Lake Washington fishery for sockeye here in Alaska.     I just don't see how long may patience will run using bare hooks so I plan to rig my two hook herring rig with the hooks spaced about 24 inches apart so I can have a herring on the lead hook and a trailing red gamakatsu hook a foot or two behind the herring.
