Hey fellas, I'm heading out to Sunny Cove (southeast end of Fox Island) on Friday if this forecast holds. Sailing pal who spent the Fourth of July holiday in those waters picked up plenty of salmon while at anchor nearby.  He's got me thinking that I can find a silver prize if I spent some time on the water.  Beats working. Can I tempt anyone else to play hooky on Friday?

It would be going out with Seward Water Taxi on a 9 am pickup at Lowell Point, returning around 5:30.  The RT on the water taxi is about $75 -- if that's a consideration. Look at the forecast for out there -- chance of rain, but winds at 5 and seas at 1 ft.  Plus FISH.

I'm likely to go down on Thursday night, stay with a friend in Seward. C'mon. You know you want to go...

Yeah, I got the AI from akfishn.  I should be able to chase some silvers in Seward after my guests leave in a week and a half.

I think it's more I need to go. May need to clear an item or two off the calendar but I'm going to try!

I need to hit the inlet on Sat if possible. I have to try the reds. It'll drive me crazy until I try it in a place I know at least a few fish are around.

I will definitely let you know.

Rats, Matt. Next time. One of my non-fishing kayaker pals is going out with me, thus allaying Dave's concern that I won't react quickly enough to a bubble net. Wind forecast is still light, but seas seem to be building. I'll start at Sunny Cove and use a drift sock if needs be...

I'm heading out in about half an hour, and thought I should offer SOMEBODY (Kard?) encouragement to clear his calendar...  If you can, let's meet up at Lowell Point at 9 am Friday for the water taxi -- the forecast is sunny, seas at 2 ft, winds less than 5 kts. Looks like a nice day in store.

Well mission sort of accomplished. I have to run to Kenai to run supplies to my father who just had a pacemaker put in last month. So if I can ill try down there. Clear my work schedule and now this. But need to put family first !

Wonderful trip -- but I could sure use some coaching on net skills.  I lost two silvers right beside the kayak trying to get them netted.  I wasn't in a place where I could just pull 'em up into my lap and bong 'em, then hurry to shore and deal with them.  (That was my tried and true method last year. The net was never an issue.) Instead, I was fishing in just southeast of Sunny Cove, about a mile out.  Using a net seemed prudent -- or it would have been if I'd been coordinated.  Heartbreak!

The fishing wasn't red hot -- four hook-ups trolling from 10 until 5.  Maybe a dozen jumpers all day -- mostly silvers, but a couple pinks too.  Lots of cod brought up when I wasn't trolling but just mooching off the bottom. The wind was light, the seas held at 1 ft and there wasn't a cloud in the sky.  Watched a pod of orcas at a distance, and then two humpbacks at 100 yards fin-slapping the water, tailing, breaching.  Dance of the leviathans. Sublime.  Big rafts of tufted puffins riding the waves.  Trolled around the south and east of Fox Island, admiring the arches and cliffs and marine life. Felt like the luckiest person in the world to be out there with a rod in hand.

This morning I peddled out past Tonsina and fed the last of my herring to the flouder and cod. No halibut, which was my target.  Long drift back from Tonsina Creek as the wind picked up and started to stack the waves running against the tide.
