So here's a question for everyone who has been to both the ORC and AOTD; (or if you just have an opinion):

What's a better / more fun way to determine the winner; heaviest fish, or the AOTY point system?
You're allowed  two votes on this poll because I think it'll make for better trends.

BTW - great pics and fish of the AOTD! Looks like everyone had a great time, and I'm sorry I missed out.

My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I like the AOTD point system better. I think it takes a greater level of skill and planning rather than the just luck of catching a single big fish.

Hence why I like the ORC system.  Gives me half a chance.

I really like the AOTD system, but I kind of also like the luck aspect of the ORC: the ORC system works out good because it give the first timers and out-of-town/state guys at the ORC a good shot at the title.  That being said, I think the variety in tournaments going on here is pretty cool.

For the ORC, I'd love to see a Pro Staff division that uses the AOTD model.  All non-sponsored fishers would still play by the single largest fish rule.  Maybe once we reach 100 participants.....

I like single heaviest fish, although i would have won if it was single longest this year!  ;D I think the AOTD format sounds fun but having 70-100 running around Depoe Bay trying to catch greenling in and around the kelp sounds really messy. With that number of people on the water I think it would be a better to leave the format as is. It would be fun to give it a shot at PC though.

Big leap to assume sponsorship equates to a more competent angler.

AOTD  & ORC both require a "game plan" and a little luck.  ORC format does give total newbies a better chance to place higher in the field.  That said Ling Ling just won Roy's AOTD tourney as a newbie, beating out many seasoned competitors.

I like both. GS7 was the AOTD system and I had a blast! ORC I had a blast! Humpy is going to be single longest fish and I still think I will have a blast! I like that all the tournaments have differences to them and not all the same.

I like AOTD scoring. It really forces you to come up with a strategy and I think that makes for a much more interesting competition. I'm not saying that ORC doesn't require any strategy and it was just as much fun(despite placing in 27th)...I just think luck is a little more at play with the heaviest fish scoring.
I don't think being familiar with the fishing grounds poses as much of an advantage over the out of towners  either and that goes for both tournaments. Success is a little bit of preparation and luck coming together.
Let's get real for a second...bottom fishing is easy. With everyone more or less using the same baits it's obvious that being in the right place at the right time is what it all boils down to.
I think that the fisherman's kayak ability  and comfort level on the water is probably more important than angling prowess. Ron Swanson said "...fishing's not that hard...". Kayaking is different...someone with more experience/comfort on the water is probably going to test their limits a little bit to get to a spot that would shy away a noobie if they think it will produce high scoring fish.
Anyway I like AOTD's scoring system  more but they are both a lot of fun. I think with the size of ORC a hybrid of both scoring systems could make for a really cool event. I'm not proposing any type of changes though. These events are both really great on their own but I feel like AOTD is the under dog...all I'm saying is: the coast guard won't restrict us from launching if they think it's too windy.  :P
I'd love to see AOTD grow to become as big of an event as ORC. That's not just because I live here...I just think our stomping grounds don't get the buzz they deserve. But perhaps it's better that way? I hate tourists!

I realize I am new to this sport but I'm not new to  bottom fishing. I went into this event with a plan and a prayer. Lady luck answered back! I hope I'm not sounding inflated... I've been on a high since Saturday...just know that you haven't seen the last of me! (Famous last words)

My vote is keep ORC scoring the way it is. Noah summed it up well.

I don't really care... "shut up and fish", isn't that what Sig says. :)

I don't think you radically alter how you do a successful tourney though.

I do like spot's idea, but wonder if it might limit the participants?

To that end, having a pro division that required technical proficiency and a plan would most certainly seperate the men from the boys.   >:D
