Ok. Let's set a date. This spring weather is going to get a lot of us thinking about the summer.

Better to plan ahead. As per the suggestions this years format will be slightly different. It will be a halibut only tournament.

I'm up for suggestions but I'm leaning towards biggest fish by length over two days. We will start morning of the 28th and wrap up fairly early on the 29th. Thinking 3pm. I'm also open to making it just one day.

You'll notice I left the venue open as well. Input would be appreciated. I'm open for anything from Seward down to Homer.

What say you all?

I'd say homer. More fish I think, plus Seward is a nightmare for those of us with trailers as there's no where to park. You could maybe even say the whole area from the spit out to deep creek is fair game

Well Homer isn't a bad idea. I just stopped by the Chamber booth and they gave me the prizes they had for the winner of the Kayak Div. so I told him I'd apply it with a thank you to the Homer a Chamber and sportsmans warehouse.  I'd say it has to be close to $150 to $200 worth of stuff.  A NRS adult life jacket. A 32litre drybag, a Shakespeare line counter reel and rod set up!!!

Off to a good start in collecting prizes!!!

Do we know if Andy's in state on June 28?

I think one day is sufficient. If we have a contest on Saturday and get weathered out, then we still have Sunday available for an improving Marine forecast.

For halibut, I prefer Deep Creek. But with the Homer prizes in play, perhaps Homer makes the most sense. The location doesn't matter too much to me. I noticed, however, that the tides for the 28th are a pretty big swing -- it's minus 2 at the morning low and a tidal swing of about 21 feet. So just to throw that in for consideration on the date. Less of an issue in Homer than Deep Creek.

I'll be around to fish.  Location doesn't matter to me.  The beaches will be a bit more crowded for camping, so if we do homer....we need to try and book some spots.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

I'm ok with either location. I think odds of a halibut are better at deep creek or whiskey gulch. I don't mind big currents. I'm a firm believer that you can catch halibut only during slack tides is a myth. It's safer and easier to fish but in heavier current the scent trail gets carried further. Since I doubt any of us will be anchoring I'm not against big tides. I will say if you are just drifting with the tide, not much of a scent trail and the bait goes flying by.

I will say June 21 does look better and the mid day slack is a high tide. Hmmmm.

Ok. June 21 or 28???

The actual date doesn't matter to me, but if there is a -2 low tide there will be clammers clogging the beach from kasilof to anchor point

One cool thing we can do is drift from deep creek to whiskey since we will have cars to shuttle! I have found that is an effective and relaxing way to fish!

Not this year!! Doesn't seem to be any clams. The next weekend is July 4th weekend. So that's probably not great.

Matts idea sounds fun but we'd have to start relatively early and weather would have to be perfect.

Leaning toward the 21st now. Input please!!!  I just want as many folks who can to participate!

I'm down for whatever. I like the 21st. Not to worried about the clammers. They reduced the bag limit and word is out they are gone. The 4th would be a bad idea! That place is insane on that holiday

I will not be able to participate on the June 21st weekend due to travels in the Lower48 for training.  :'(

Well CRV83, your participation could easily be 20% of total participation. At minimum it's likely to be 10%. Bigger tides are a challenge. But we all will face them. If I thought it would significantly diminish the experience for others then I'd vote for moving it. But while possibly more challenging, I personally don't feel like it's going to diminish my experience. In fact I think it may help to catch fish.

Folks chime in!!!

The 28th will be fine -- I think it's more important to have participation rather than the better tides. This event is more about building the community of Alaskan kayak anglers at this stage. I vote for the 28th -- and I'll go to B&Js to look for some heavier weights to bring along.

This made me laugh! What about earlier in June. By the end of May activity is usually pretty steady
