I was told the big kings are caught in May. The bruiser kings you see originate from one specific River in British Columbia from what I hear. At some point in the summer the big spawners start working their way back home.

I'll do more research though.

Which river?  There aren't a lot of bruiser kings of that size in BC anymore.

Check out this ADFG CWT report for Kodiak ... http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/regulations/regprocess/fisheriesboard/pdfs/2013-2014/kodiak/rcs/rc066_ADFG_Summary_King-Salmon_CWT.pdf

Yup, 70-90% of the fish are from outside AK.

The majority of the really big kings caught out of Old Harbor are from the Kisumkalum river. It's a trib of the Skeena.

I thought so ... same fatties that the Queen Charlotte fisheries take.  Which makes sense, as QC is right in the migration path.

Still have this on my radar. I'm planning to go. As I've said before, my FIL is a guide down there. I'll check in with him about the kings coming through. Also, several of my colleagues work in our Kodiak office. I don't know much about the derby, but I'm more interested in catching a couple big fish than beating out the power boat guys. A derby win would be awesome, of course. But I'd not let that prospect belittle the joy of catching a monster king (in comparison to our homer kings) from a yak.

Let me know what we need to know, and I can try to scout some of it out.

Those are some monster fish. This trip sounds like it is going to be a blast.

Not only are they landing 40 and 50 pounders out of old harbor right now!  Jeff got a salmon shark on video last week.  (

I can't even imagine how big they are going to be right before they take off back to their home streams.  I'm told Mid April to mid may but I have only begun the intel gathering.  Too early and I think we run into the herring run which in a way is great but in other ways it's too much bait in the water.  I don't mind going a tad later if it means better halibut prospects as long as it doesn't handicap us too severely on the kings.

Let's keep gathering the intel!!!!

I am up for the trip but the dates will be a factor. I have a bunch of plans for fishing so I have to prioritize the bucket list before I am 100% in for Kodiak.

I got a huge deadline at work on April 30, and to be safe I shouldn't plan anything for 2 weeks after that.  So it's looking like I'll probably miss this one.  Anyone up for first week of September?  I'll start working on that one!

WHAT???  UH,  no! May 16th it is then!!!!

All kidding aside, I know you have a million opportunities and limited resources...for most of us it's time. But we can move the dates around a bit.  The good thing about planning trips in April/May is that you get fewer opposition for moving it closer to the summer time frame!!!

Our deadline just got pushed out to May 15, because our customer was 2 weeks later in signing the contract, so we're getting started later.

I'm out ... no way I can pull this off.   :'(
