I have been playing around with the whole "making money off the internet" thing for a while.  You basically just place ads in your youtube videos.  I did it quite a bit at first.  But now, I only "monetize" videos after having them up a week or two. I think its a turn off to the basic viewers.  But if you look it up three months later, i figure you must want to watch it for a reason.

I post fairly frequently.  I'd say I get 500 to 1500 views per video.  I haven't monetized all of my videos.  I am trying to learn the difference between how the title inlfuences hits.  The "tags".  etc.

Here's my analytics for the last 28 days of my youtube videos.  $5.27 last month!!!  Woohoo!!! I can find a beer for that somewhere!!!  But you can imagine if you got one of those "landing an octopus from a kayak" type videos with millions of hits...it might be wise to at least know how this stuff works.

Hey!  Why did my pop-up ad try to look up my ARREST record!  Do we know each other?   :D

I might want to screen what the ads are selling, I think.

Lol. You have the ability to do some ad screening. I don't bother but that's good input actually.

It's amazing how they mine the data to target the ads. Id be looking up vehicle repairs or even email friends about a part and the ads for those items will come up. Scary in a way....

Very cool!!

Thanks for sharing Rudy and sorry for the threadjack...

I'll check out the "analytics" of my channel when I get home and get a chance tonight...

I've been trying to get a little more tech savvy with the YouTube thing...I post a fair amount of stuff up there so maybe it is worth trying out the "monetization" thing...

I made a little "trailer" for my YouTube channel a bit ago that I think pops up when people open my channel at least on a desktop...

Thanks again and good luck with your GoPro search!

 :)

Sincerely,

Jim

Awesome vid.  And yup, it popped up.

I don't consider it really a hijack as this discussion adds to the "end product" or reason for the initial question.

I'd think further south where you have more participants, you could easily get ten times the views I get.  Add some more magic like sponsorship and good social media networking, it could very easily yield 100 dollars a month I think.  $1,200 per year?  Well that's gotta be along the lines of the value of a decent sponsorship...for doing something you are already doing anyways.

I've learned a few things.

1) Weird luck drives clicks sometimes.  I have a b-roll footage of a sea otter eating an octopus.  Some site called cuteseaotters.com or something like that auto linked to it and it drove a few thousand hits.  It's one of my most popular videos which drives me a bit nuts since I have a fishing video site.

2) My short halibut trailer that quickly racked up a thousand hits was thanks to KayakFishingMagazine.net coverage thanks to polepole.  Good to know folks on popular social media sites.

3) Review are a great way to drive views.  I haven't discovered that so much in youtube yet, but I think reviewing products gets searched and hit a lot more than my average day of catching fish. I see the traffic difference in my blogs.

Part of this project was trying to integrate everything on google sites....youtube, picasa, google+, etc.  I may check out vimeo next but  I'm waiting till I have actually a more refined concept when I try that out.

The next step might be to integrate some type of stock footage revenue but I have to take more pictures.

I joke to my GF that from here on out, when I catch a bunch of salmon or halibut, i am going to devise a system where I can just tow it around with a camera attached.  One in a million I can get a killer whale to hit it, then woohoo!!!  If I die, then my kids will be set!  lol.  But I think we all have opportunities for video and photo ops that 90% of humanity will never get the chance to experience let alone record.  Might be worth something one day....I hope.....

Typed this around a few print jobs...hope it makes sense...

Great insight Rudy, and I really appreciate you sharing your experience...

It is crazy when you look at some of the silly junk on YouTube and how many gazillion views it has... ???

Thanks again!  :)

Jim

Searching for information on which to buy and I found a good comparison video on Youtube.

The best stuff starts around 3 1/2 minutes into the video. Gives good examples of clarity, audio lighting, etc.

It really is just beer money for me, but my videos only average about 1,000 views.  I post maybe two videos a month on average.  That nets me FIVE bucks a month.  lol.  Though, can you imagine if you got a video that had 1 million views?  happens all the time.

All I do is monetize my youtube videos I post.  I think its fairly straight forward if you look it up on youtube.  https://www.youtube.com/account_monetization

Also take TONS of pictures, that's frankly where the money is.  I had a magazine run a full page photo and that was worth $250.  I also just won a contest for Cabela's #itsinmynature contest and that was another $250 gift certificate!  Last week for the first time in a long time, I think my fishing netted me more funds than I spent!  But its nothing like many of the opportunities out there.  I just do it since I am doing it anyways.

Good luck!  Getting the shot is as easy as taking the gopro.  The PITA is editing it afterwards.  But you might as well learn.  Ya never know when you get a crazy close encounter or hook up to something crazy (or get rammed by a boat...sorry jammer).  You might as well know how it works.  For the most part it's peanuts what i described.  There are definitely folks who work hard to write articles, take DSLR photos, maintain awesome websites that take it to another level.

Still you are already out doing it.  For me, its a blast to look back a few years.  Have fun!

Yup. I've used it on the job for some fish ladder work. Editing it down takes some getting use to.
