I know there is another thread on cameras in general.  So I have been waiting for the new gopro to come out.  Now that it has, I am thinking instead of picking up a gopro black edition for $499, I could pick up three of the standard gopro hero ($130 each).

I guess if I needed super high resolution stuff I can see needing the higher resolution. Slowmo would be nice but how often would I use it? built in wifi and stuff seems like it just eats battery....

Do I need the gopro 4? The gopro hero does pretty much everything my hero 2 does....

What do you all think??

Is any store near you clearing out any Hero 3+? Maybe some of those may be on sale or listed on ebay, craigslist etc?

The wifi doesn't kill battery life anymore,  just makes it easier to use remote

Slow mo is sweeeeeeet!!  I can't wait for 1080p at 120 fps but I'm concerned it will reduce battery life significantly. Battery life is MUCH better on the 3+ than the 3 when using Wifi so I imagine the 4 will have sufficient performance.  I always use my Gopros with battery backpacks.  I have spare batteries and spare backpacks and most of the time I don't need to swap batteries on the water.  I don't leave them running constantly though.

Well, the features on the Hero 4 are really nice, but at $500, I'm not sure they are necessary.  I'd personally lean towards some black 3+ units on closeout.

A little off topic: A cheaper alternative to the backpack is getting aftermarket batteries. You can pick up 2, with double-charger, for $24 on Amazon. I've generally had good luck with aftermarket batteries on my digital cameras, YMMV.

I realize that is not equivalent to a "bacpac", because it's a pain to change the battery on the water, I'm just saying, for people that don't want to bite off the investment of the backpack and new back door, it's another option. It can be nice to have for off-the-water uses, too... for example getting a timelapse of setup/teardown of gear, etc.

I'm looking forward to upgrading to the backpack soon on my 3+. I haven't had too many times yet when I really cared (I use the remote and usually the camera is off when I'm not fishing or if it's slow), but the few times I've needed it I've missed some really good action due to not having any battery left. I now have 3 batteries, but as I said above, not fun to change in some situations.

+1 on the aftermarket batteries......I have been using wasabi replacements and they last twice as long in my digital cameras at work

Anyone hears of a good closeout deal on the 3+ please let me know.

Several places already have them marked down to $349, albeit, still expensive, but $50 cheaper than they were.

The 4's aren't getting good reviews, yet.  Might want to wait a little while and see if it's just folks who crab about any changes to their favorite toys, or if there are some early-production issues.
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

I LOVE new tech and toys.  But I have to say, given that I don't make any money off these toys, i.e. its for personal enjoyment, I am not wondering if a close out white edition 3 won't be enough.  The ultra slowmo and stuff would be gret, but that means I have to upgrade the sd card and have more batteries so I can capture a whole day at 120fps so I can have 2 seconds of slomo.

Arghh.....still haven't decided.....

Gopro3? 4? Drift cameras? ....

This is a mini vid I made of a few Blue Rockfish getting harvested on Saturday...slowed each shot down to 25% and I think it looks pretty cool.

Taken with a GoPro HERO 3+ Silver and edited with iMovie...I didn't mess with color adjustments or anything but am sure I could have made the fishies pop more against the green water if I tried...

$300 here:

Sweet!  Thanks for posting!

Plenty good for what I do.  If I ever get this fishing to pay off a little more, I may go for the full meal deal.  But I don't think I will be shooting footage for National Geographic or Discovery channel anytime soon so I may go the cheap route.  Better to have two of those or the white than one of the higher end ones....I think.....

Well...I hope the fishing thing never pays off in anything but satisfaction to go fishing in some ways.  I would HATE to switch my passion into a job in so many ways.  Having said that, I just made my second $100 from youtube...over three years!  better keep my day job.  lol.
