$175 on shipping is hella good to get one up here.  I had an outback cost me almost $400 to get up here

So, I'm bringing this back up to the top as my yak was scheduled to be delivered this week.

The dealer sent an email asking for an additional $850 to get me the boat I ordered, and said it could be another four weeks till it gets here.

Really thinking about going down to REI and having them send a Propel 13 up here.

I really like my propel and with the free shipping and REI kick back it is a steal. I just got my rebate and it was $379.

The REI free shipping is hard to beat.  $850 for shipping?  That's a little over the top.  I love my mirage drives but its definitely not the only kayak out there.  I need to get more info.

Which dealer was that?  Alaska Kayak Academy?  They quoted you $175 and are now asking for an additional $850?  Did they also say you won a million dollars and all you need to do is send them your bank account information?

What model did you order?   PA?

I know Alaska Raft and Kayak was quoting something on the order of $500 for shipping for a PA.    Still pricey but I have seen the costs.  Nearly unavoidable for shipping.  Lots of places used to try and honor their shipping deals to Alaska but you start getting into large lightweight items like kayaks and they are just going to cost more to ship up.  Most places have started to get smart and won't honor the free shipping and other deals.  The big box stores are an exception as they often distribute logistics costs across the entire system.

It is one of the main reasons I want Alaska Raft and Kayak to succeed.  If they can order a dozen kayaks at a time, it goes way down.  If at one point they order a lot more at the beginning of the year, the costs come down even more.  Hobie has an interesting business model in the way they price things.  Its a little out of the ordinary I think but they can do it because their product is so "different" than the other options out there I think.

It was AKA, the boat was a Jackson Big Rig and we ordered it back in February  This is the reply we got yesterday. I didn't change anything not even the spelling.

James and Alyssia:

shiping on the big rig is OUT of this WORLD:

$850!!!!!

it is crazy: $120 TN to WA

over $700 from WA to AK

tried multple shippers, can't find a reasonable way to ship them up.

If you are willing to pay that shipping, I ll have the boat sent;

if not,

I ll run a refund on your card.

let me know

sorry

Received this when asking for the refund

not my fault Alyssia.

Jackson just gave me numbers this week.

Jackson takes care of shippiing, includes it on their invoice to me.

Last year it was cheaper, Jackson obsorbed some of the frieght, they are no longer willing to do that.

I have been talking to shippng companies trying to get a better rate. In fact I still am trying find a reasonable price to ship these boats.

trying to get the order to Seattle, then have it combined with other, no container size, customers.

but not holding out much hope.

What really makes me suspect, is the time from ordering the boat to just now being told about the "additional" charges. I know that the shipping charge was just an estimate but to be that far off?

The timing is weird to me also, do you think Jackson would wait since February to get back to one of their dealers?  I guess they may very well have waited four weeks to get back with the details of the order and that the dealer may not have know about the cost for shipping to Alaska

Except for his Craigslist posting for a new Jackson Cuda 14 that is brand new and still in the shipping packaging, I can't imagine a larger yak would cost less to ship from the same place.

The more I read here, I realize I must have gotten a hella-good deal from Austin Canoe & Kayak. We got our 2014 Outback shipped here for $100.

However, my wife's brother in law tried to get the same deal from ACK, and they had nothing like that available anymore. He wound up going through Alaska Raft and Kayak. I'd determined a long time ago that I'd not go there b/c I think they take advantage of the local market by marking way up and the service is horrible and somewhat condescending (sorry Rudy).

There is a Jackson Kayak rep up here b/c one day I ran into him at Best Buy. He saw my "Yakattack" sticker and struck up a conversation in the parking lot. I have no idea where he's doing business...but he has to be here somewhere. I'm thinking I'd like to get a nice sit-on-top paddle yak, and Jackson has some nice boats...for those days when pedaling isn't necessary...

...oh, and I want a lot of other things I'll never get... :-)

I love my Jackson Big Tuna it has lots of deck space, you guys from way up north might save shipping costs by inviting those less fortunate from the south to come up for a two day fishing trip with the catch being they have to bring you the boat you ordered from down here. :banjo:

Yah it's tough. I've been working with Mark. He got crushed by all the free shipping offers or cheap ones. Very few places offer that now outside of big box like REI.  My goal is to advance kayak fishing in Alaska. I think this might at least be an opportunity to relay info to the Hobie Dealer from forums like this to see if we can't meet somewhere in the middle

I have a direct line to AK Raft now so all and any constructive criticism I can pass on.

No need to be sorry Jeff, lets get it straightened out. It'd be awesome to have a good dealer up here with good selection AND good prices!!!

Cool, My Propel will not be the only one in the state. What will be cool for you will be the
10% member rebate next year.

How do you like your Propel compared to the Outback, I'm about to pull the trigger on an Outback that my friend will be able to pick up for me in Texas on his way up but if I can get something sooner that would be awesome.
