A hardware store funnel and a couple of feet of plastic hose is one of the cheapest and most useful pieces of kayaking gear you can buy.  It allows you to take a whizz while sitting comfortably and safely in your kayak seat, and without attracting much attention from nearby boaters or people on shore.

My new Mythic dry suit showed up on Wednesday.  I tried it on and it seems like a good suit but with this being my first dry suit I have nothing to compare it to.  It seems like it will work pretty good.  The socks seem to fit pretty good.  With a good pair of wool socks on they fit pretty well, not too big.  The neck and wrist gaskets are a soft latex, not too restricting like I was worried about.  They don't seem to tight so I think I can get away without cutting them (whew!).  The material that it's made out of, to me, seems kind of thin.  I wonder how it will hold up (time will tell), but again without owning another to compare it too it's hard for me to judge it.  I wont have a chance to get to any water to try it out this weekend so hopefully next weekend I will get a chance to get it wet.

Latex neck gaskets don't last forever.  Ultraviolet radiation, grease from your skin, and suntan lotion degrade them over time.  First they get kind of flabby.  Then little cracks start to develop.  Then eventually as you are taking the drysuit on or off the gasket will tear, and you'll need to replace it.  When I know that a neck gasket is on its last legs, I hope that it will tear as I'm taking off my dry suit, not when I'm putting on my dry suit, so the failure of the neck gasket doesn't screw up a day of fishing and/or kayaking.  You can do temporary and emergency repairs to a torn neck gasket with duct tape.  When I was doing 70-90 days a year of whitewater kayaking, my neck gaskets would last about a year and a half.  With less heavy use, they last longer.  But eventually they poop out.

I've replaced many many neck gaskets.  Kokatat has instructions for replacing neck gaskets on its web site at http://kokatat.com/media/pdfs/KokatatNeckgasketW.pdf and http://kokatat.com/media/pdfs/KokatatNeckgasketWO.pdf . With practice and the right equipment you can cut or pull an old neck gasket off and attach a new one in 20 minutes. Some dry suits have elaborate collars on top of their neck gaskets which make it more of a hassle to replace the neck gaskets, but it's always do-able.

If wrist gaskets are protected by cuffs, they rarely need to be replaced.  Kokatat has instructions for replacing wrist gaskets on its website at http://kokatat.com/media/pdfs/KokatatAnkleWrist.pdf .

I was thinking of trying some 303 aerospace on the gaskets.

That's what Kokatat recommends to extend the life of its gaskets.

I was thinking of just going outside.  It was raining hard enough but then it stopped.  Figures.

You can do a "Swan Dive" into the pond next door to my house.  It should be wet enough.   ;D

You still need boots or some kind of water shoes though, right?

I took my Mythic Suit to PC  last week test it out. I have only been out in the ocean maybe 10-15 times but the surf was bigger than any of the other days I went. I got completely covered with water on my way out and the suit was comfortable and most importantly when I was done for the day, I was dry. After I was done for the day, I got in the surf and a allowed waves to roll over me and I kept dry.

I can tell by wearing the suit that it won't last as long but I knew that going in. Mythic Gear is pretty up front about who they are targeting. If you can afford a Kokatat or similar and you go out a lot, this suit may not be for you. I will be going out at best two times a month and probably not even that so this should work until such time as i can afford a suit with all the bells and whistles. So, if you are like me and want to fish year around but don't have a ton of extra money, maybe this suit is for you.

On a side note, I caught about 13(threw some back) sea bass and brought in a small Ling and lost a keeper Ling at the kayak. I took my go pro and will probably post a short video in a few days.

Beefer, what is it about the Mythic suit that gives you the feeling it won't last long?

Are the materials thinner or less robust than other gear you have tried?
