My buddy "Chris the Fish" and I went out on our yaks Friday.  Got this nice ling and some greenling too.

Depoe Bay is so easy if you haven't been there yet.  Fall out of your rig and paddle out the jaws a few hundred feet away.  On occasion (with southwesterly's) when the waters a little warmer and the mycid shrimp are in thick you can fish while surrounded by whales.

Nice Ling, and the weather looks excellent too! Doesn't get much better than that.

Hey Wannabe,

I see from another post

I'm in Corvallis and am desperate for partners to fish Beverly Beach.
   Me too!

Mostly Seal Rock to Salmon River for me.  Coastal rivers and estuaries for crab & cutts, perch, salmon & steelhead.  Ocean for everything else.

I'm somewhat disabled so need easier access but do just fine on the water.  Let me know when you're planning a trip over.  I need to fish more often.

Nice ling.  That would be the species leader for AOTY if it had been entered.  If you need to fish more often, the AOTY contest is a great motivator.   Okay, enough of the AOTY plug.

Looking forward to more coastal Oregon reports in the future.

That all sounds great! and within easy driving range for me. I'm over to the eastern reaches of the state with my 10 y/o hunting redbands for the week but I'll get hold of you in the near future.

Nice fatty!! Man i need to get out on the big blue. This damn wind is killing me. The wind wasn't too bad up there? It's been blowing here every day for weeks on end.
See ya on the water..

I wonder if we should consider Depot Bay as an alternative launch site for the Oregon Coast Derby.  It would make launching and landing a lot easier on the uninitiated or those who need a little easier access.

Mornings before noon seem to be the best, then the wind tends to kick up.  We had two days last week where it wasn't bad (Fri/Sat) and then yesterday afternoon the norwesterlies pushed in again.

We have very little wind this morning, no whitecaps and I'm thinking about hitting the water again today.  Try for some of the Blacks and Cab's that were non-existent Friday.

Depoe Bay Report for Friday, July 25, 2008

Got my first cabbie on my third pull with a chrome bar.  Nice fish 23".

Next cabbie was only 18".  Went to put it on the stringer (scuba loop type) and the first cabbie was gone. (note to self: improve stringer system).

Went quite a while without a strike.  Switched to many offerings short of bait.  Finally went to a chrome bar.  Bam, bam, bam.  Black and three kelp greenlings in less than 30 mins.

All over reefs or kelp edges.  Nothing off sandy bottom.

I'd dropped a Danielson crab trap on my way out with a nice big Ling head in it.  A powerboat approached it while I was out and was about to pull it until the resident on the deck up above warned them off.  Not a single crab on my return  ???

The best part of the day - a grey surfaced 25 yards from me passing thru on its way south.

FS,

I plan to be in your area the middle of August for a couple of days.  Would like to try some lingcod fishing.  Any advice, or where to get good information, would be appreciated.  This is my first shot at the ocean so some easy stuff would be good.  Nice ling - Alan

If it's your first shot at the ocean then yes, you should consider taking it easy the first few times.  Take time to get comfortable.  Think ahead.  How would you respond if a whale surfaced 20' from you?  Or if you hooked into a shark - how would you release it!

If I'm available and the bar is open I'd be more than happy to accompany you out of Depoe Bay.  Its a very simple launch, a productive fishery and probably the easiest you'll find.

Maybe a couple other local Yakkers would like to join us too.  Lets us know what days and about where you'll be staying.

I'm guessing that just cutting the line isn't the best route.  How are you suppose to deal with a hooked shark?

Hi FS,

Got a camp site at Bevery Beach August 12 - 14th, and would like to catch some fish.  A friend from Florida is coming out for a visit and I'd like to give the ocean a try.  I'll have plenty of jigs to try also, and appreciate any help or information.  As for whales and sharks, as long as they don't try to eat me or knock me over...... Yup. This sound interesting to me too. I'd enjoy coming over for the day for some action off Beverly, or even Depoe Bay.
