As I am just a beginner I may just come down and watch and learn. Never been to whiskey gulch can you get a 16 foot trailer down to the beach or just a vehicle and is it tent camping?

You can get a trailer down there if your rig is four wheel drive.  HUGE RV's get down there. though I have never seen one go up.  At the bottom of the hill, the public use area is to the left.  There is a private camp ground to the right.

With the major disclaimer that I have no clue as to your "water comfort" level or physical abilities, I think not planning on getting on the water is a bad idea for a few reasons.  Obviously if the water and waves are above your comfort level, then don't go.  But there is a better than 50% chance it will be as flat as a lake.  AND if you are going to wipe out in the surf BIG time like I did last year, its better to have friends around to help collect gear and make sure you are safe...seriously.  No one is going to laugh...well, we will laugh, but its because we all have done it and we are remembering that.  BUT you will be safe.

Why not try an intermediate place like Cook Inlet when a bunch of veterans of that location are around?  Yah we are busy fishing, but you will likely be between us and the launch, since I would recommend staying close to the launch, which would be a good thing if something did happen.  I absolutely guarantee that someone will come help you.  lol.  You won't need it.

You already have a bunch of the gear right?  May 30 is like 6 weeks away!  I would think you can expect to try it even solo from WG as long as the weather is modest prior to the derby.  I'll be down likely every weekend the weather allows (apparently not this weekend) for at least one weekend day till the derby.  Yah, I am a royal pain in the butt to coordinate with but I will be down for my allocated one day a week of absolute free fishing I negotiated into my life contract.  I'm going!   C'mon let's fish!

I am going to hit the area a couple of times before the May 30. I have pulled my Jumping Jack Trailer up several times and didn't have any problems. Rudy do you know who owns the private camp ground?

Ok Ill make a plan to get down there Friday evening, Ill bring my yak and stuff if I feel comfortable I will give it a shot.   Just need to get some lures and flashers for trolling.  Still need a harpoon and buoy just in case I guess, but the rest I believe we have.

I will be up in Alaska and so will Wobbler at that time.  Unfortunately, we will not be near Whiskey Gultch.  We will be close to Petersburg.  It would probably be a little out of the way for you to bring me my trophy.  >:D

If you have a Penn 12/0,  fully loaded with 50lb braid, a hell of a cast, he'll of a tail wind, and epic accuracy you may just have a chance from there ;D

Ok BUMP!!!!

Less than a month out!  So I want to throw something out there and make a decision soon.

Halibut only or salmon and halibut?  My preference is halibut only given the annual limit for kings is only two in the area and its really the tail end of the king season.  I want to give everyone who wants a king to catch one without having to save one slot for the derby.

So unless I hear any complaints, I plan to make it halibut only for the NWKA derby.  Thoughts? comments?

Halibut gets my vote...although I have yet to get my deck bloody via salmon.

Get ready to lose....I've got a super secret spot and a super secret trick up my sleeve this year.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

Bring it on Andy!  But frankly AkRod is the big fish leader for the area. I'm looking at some "additional techniques" as well.  Gotta catch a king this weekend though for the anchor pt derby!

Sadly, I will be gone for this.   On a positive note, I'll be stuck/fishing on a tropical island.

I was booted from the Island trip, and have the weekend off(so far)!  I'll be there Saturday, but not Sunday.

If I'm feeling better I'll go to Whiskey Gulch this Saturday to practice, since it'll be my first time there, and my first time fishing for halibut I could use the practice.  I'll be trolling kokanee and trout behind a big flasher/dodger...and see what happens!
