FYI, Next Adventure on SE Grand in Portland is clearing out some stuff, including kayak carts.  I picked up a Wheeleez standard model, with the regular tires (as opposed to the beach tires) for $80.  They have a Wheeleez mini with the beach tires on display for $89.  Couple other brands on display as well.  THey may have more in stock, I don't know.  Worth checking out if you are in the market.

I have the mini-Wheeleez and while they work, I find the regular beach wheels so much better, esp. if you are planning any treks across loose sand.  That said, $89 is a pretty good deal.

I will probably pick up a set of beach tires for my new cart at some point down the road.

I'm suppose to head out of town early right after work... Very tempted to swing over there first before they are all gone.

I've been thinking of building something along the lines of the Hobie cart but for my OK.  Was looking for the wheels.  The rest will be with PVC pipe.

Too bad they don't have a way to order on their website (from what I can see).

Also, if you search this site and the NCKA sites you'll find lots of info. on making the cart you describe.

Yes, saw that.  They sell each tire @ $59 each.  Seems ike it would be cheaper to buy one of the carts and modify it to meet my needs.

Not sure what you're thinking about doing FishSniffer, but carts like the Hobie one that are designed with rods that insert into the scupper holes are generally considered a bad idea for non-Hobie kayaks.  Something about the strength of the scupper holes themselves.  I'd hate to see you start a leak in a scupper hole.

Also.. I have seen at least three PVC carts literally explode while in use.  Granted the kayaks where loaded with gear at the time, but I find that they generally don't hold up.  The homemade carts I have seen that have worked well have all been welded.  Thats not to say that a PVC cart couldn't be made right.

I was planning to build a cart out of PVC, but after pricing the total cost (on the order of 30-40$ for materials) and estimating how much time it would take me to do it, I got lazy.  A Wheeleez for $80 bucks was a no brainer.

I went with the full size cart because I'll mostly be using it for my OK Big Game (the Angler 13 is much less of a pain in the ass to move around).  Because it is so wide, I figure the wider stance of the big cart will be more stable on rough terrain.  If I pop the wheels off, I can still cram it in the front hold.

Very good points Brian.  Knowing I could probably only make one walk to and one back from the waters edge I too would put all my gear in the yak for the single trip.  Perhaps I should think again about building my own.  Problem is salt and that I'd store it outside.  The salt air has had its way with the anchor brackets on my driftboat and the casings on my Harley.

I wonder how long those carts will last @ Next Adventure.

My Wheeleze cart still works great after a couple years, but I don't store it outside.  I have a friend that has his in a barn next to the ocean and they seem fine.

The general consensus on Wheeleze is that they are very expensive but worth every penny.  Many guys I know that have built their own carts have eventually bought the wheeleez anyway.

Oh.. a set of wheeleze makes a great raffle prize.  That's how I got mine.

Folks heading over to Next Adventure may want to leave your credit cards at home.  They also have a shiny new OK Trident 15, a stable of Hobies, and some sweet dry suits.  "Must resist.... must resist... must resist..."

Totally agree w/ B on the cart issue. They're freaking expensive... but you pretty much need a good one. If you don't mind making and repairing one over and over than you can get away with a homebuilt cheapie.

:laughing4: In a way I'm really glad there's no kayak fishing specific stores yet. I'd be so ruined!!
