Started at 2pm. Off the water at 6pm. Two takedowns. One fish. I think a tad under 20 pounds.

Ok. Feeling more confident for the derby!!!

OK, I waited to the last moment to register for the Derby on-line. Rudy,  that might have been a money fish next Saturday. I going to refine my gear 3/20/15, since we can carry one pole I will see if I will use my 8.5 trolling rod or a shorty. I have got spoons, squids, herring and assorted dodgers and flashers in the box now but looking for the right combo. I even have some Okuma Sand Lance to try. I guess the fish will pick the best rig I just have to keep the prop turning. Sure would be cool if the Kayakers take a prize or two.

Early Bird entry as long as you are in by today.   Signing up for derbies sucks in way.  I hate them.  You are at their mercy in term of weather and rescheduling.  a lot of sitting around if weather is bad.  One year we entered the Anchor Point derby, I caught a king, then they called it off.  ARGH!

So a little more intel.  For those that follow my exploits, you may have gathered that I prefer fishing as the tide is going out.  Well there derby will be starting at low tide and ending at high.  This was the tide cycle I fished yesterday.  It's strange.  Not sure if it was silt or an algae bloom, bud the waters get murky off the spit at high tide.  I am guessing the murkiness doesn't extend all the way to the bottom but I have been told to avoid those areas.

I'm glad I went, things weren't looking so good in the morning n Homer

So looking for seams of clear water in the areas I fish pretty much dictated where I fished.  Charter guys are fishing deep off of Seldovia.  60 to 100 ft right on the bottom or close to it.  Yesterday off the spit, a lot of marks in 40 to 60 ft down in 100 ft of water.  I did catch mine only 20 or 30 ft down in 50 ft of water.

I was surprised to see the baitfish of choice.  Sand lances...little tiny ones.  Hmm....

Sounds like 5 to 8 folks might join in for the Homer Derby this year. That's awesome participation from a  pretty small group of people. Best of luck to all that make it. And make history .....

Rudy--- when you talk about "the Islands" are you thinking Elizabeth or Yukon Islands ? I've had pretty good luck near both.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Yukon Islands.  Elizabeth would be awesome but that's just too far away!

There were half dozen I could make out. But stomach was pretty full of goo. Need to rethink my bait/lure choice.

Oh as a side note it was a hatchery fin clipped. Saved the head. I'll send it in for analysis,,, if it doesn't end up in a halibut!

Dunno....

Charters working Seldovia and friends working Bear Island tell me 4 to 6 inch herring or full size hooligans are what they are finding in the stomachs.  March 1, I used herring and burned through two packs in a couple of hours...damn pollock.  This weekend i used two herring all day and caught one king and missed another one with the first green label herring.

I'm torn.  A sandlance style lure will catch more fish I think.  But the herring at green label size has done a good job of keeping the shakers off...or put another way, the average size is MUCH better with herring.  I also like to think two gamakatsu 5/0 hooks are better than a factory single hook.

I think my plan is to run Gren lable herring for the first third of the day.  If I don't get hit, I will downsize the gear to needlefish hoochies or silver horde coho killer spoon.  Then I will see what is going on.  But that's the plan as of right now.
