Hi I need to get set up to kayak fish in Alaska.
I am looking at getting one shipped up in a few weeks.
I would like a paddle kayak and have narrowed it down to 3 models.
Ocean trident ultra 4.3
Wilderness system thresher
Jackson craken
What do you think will be the best for Alaska salt water
Btw I'm also ripndrag on Alaska outdoor directory.
I called kayak acadamy in Palmer he told me it was 700 dollars to ship the jackson kayak up to ak so I'll probly buy the thresher from Amazon
Take the sticker off your hat Bend the rim and go fishing!

Just do you research on reviews of the kayaks you want first, Paddling.net and Yakangler.com are great resources.   As far as shipping the best deal I have found is from Hobie Cats Northwest out of Seattle, they quoted me $150 shipping and they will even drop it off at the barge for you. Sometimes you can get lucky on Amazon if you have prime but most of the time once you add the kayak to your cart and checkout it will get flagged and say the seller won't ship to AK.   Also if you do happen to find a kayak that will ship for free don't let that be your deciding factor in purchasing it cause it might not end up being what you really want.   Vibe Kayaks have a pretty good deal on their Sea Ghost shipped for free to the nearest Pilot Shipping Facility (Seattle) right now for $799 which includes a seat, paddle, leash, and a few other extras which is something else you have to take into consideration because all those additional things can cost another $200-400.  Ohh and I almost forgot Bass Pro will ship anything in their catalog to the store for free and REI charges like $50 and the have a ton of great kayaks.

REI charges now?  Hmm. If you can get anyone to ship up for $150, that's as low as you can expect.

All the kayaks mentioned should do the trick.

Yeap for my Propel I think it was a $54 surcharge or something, I could be wrong though.

I did find this on CL http://anchorage.craigslist.org/bod/4948951410.html  It has no price but is a great kayak and its already here!!

Below is the email I received from Hobie Cats Northwest

Hi,

The best rate I have been able to find is about $150.00. This is freight collect and has to picked up at the dock.

Let me know when you want us to send you one.

   Hi,

We ship to Alaska all the time. We just dropped a boat off at the shipper that is going to Anchorage for a customer in Eagle River.

That kayak to Anchorage cost about $230.00 but is bigger than the Outback. I'll get some quotes for you and let you know.

   Thanks

I have an extra Mini-x and an extra 2013 Hobie Outback.  I might be upgrading to a 2015 model in June.  Sort of depends on if I get accepted as a Hobie team member.  Sorry I can't be any more definite at this time.  I should know in a month or so.

I emailed the guy about the one on craigslist and he said he wanted $1370 with a rudder kit, that's a pretty good deal for that particular kayak.  They were $1300-1400 online and that's not including shipping.

Check Kayak Shed in Hood River Oregon.  They have always taken good care of me with yak price and shipping.  My new Hobie only cost $189 shipping to me.

As for your yak choice... if you are paddling in the Cook Inlet you will want something that very streamline so you can fight the current and wind.  Think of it as a really big salty river instead of a bay.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

+1
Thats a really good point.  But it can be done from a cardboard box too because this river switches direction every 6 hours.  But if you are ever in need of making headway against current and wind in Cook Inlet, you'll want a constant power of pedal drives or  a paddle kayak that can make some headway against current that can range up to 5knts and some wind.  I used my mini x and always tried to stay close to the launch.  Caught fish...not as many as my more ocean worthy kayak that allows coverage of more water.  But with my outback, like this last weekend, I could power up against a slower current at 2pm (Low tide was at 3:50pm so slack was at around 5pm) and get back to the launch.  Would have been a tough go with the mini-x.  I might have been committed till the tide change or at least until the current slacked some more an hour or two later.

I was in costco on Dimond today and they have a sit on top paddle kayak with a reasonable amount of storage space, and two rod holders for $459.  Never heard of the brand name, but lets face it, it is just a piece of floating plastic.  No shipping costs!

I'll say that the guy selling the Cuda on CL is the same guy who quoted me $175 for shipping and then the week the yak was supposed to be here asked me for $800 for shipping.

Hummmm well he must be eating the cost now because he is selling it at a lower 48 price now.  Its a decent kayak but I think you can get much more for that price.
