...and my mom for running the net! She did awesome out there in that gnarly wind!

Did I read that right?

Um yeah, what exactly does that mean?

Agreed

Sherman, I think the point is that it sounds like the winning fish was not landed by the participant who won... that kind of seems like a big deal.

I know where ya'll are going with this and I'm not bias either way, but I don't see anything in writing in the Next Adventure ORC rules that said there couldn't be an assist.   Assuming AOTY rules applied to ORC without it clearly expressed in writing isn't really fair to those that are new to NWKA and not aware of said implication.

If anyone can find this rule clearly stated in the ORC rules, I will retract my comment.

Fair enough.

From my perspective as a tandem enthusiast, I don't like the perception that I have an unfair advantage. So for the record, Mrs. Redbeard and I 100% manage our own fish on tourney days. I don't land hers, I don't touch hers, I don't get her tangles out, I don't rig her plastics, and vice versa.

Craig, I didn't see any official rules that state whether or not a net assist is kosher. So, technically you're right but I don't think it will sit well with most people.

The Tandem guys of years prior understand that the angler must land their fish without assistance.

I'm not suggesting that a title or prizes be stripped from the winner, but maybe a set of official rules be put in place so that everyone is on the same page.

Well, we don't know what the story is anyway yet, but either way, if it wasn't in the rules...

It should be for next year.  Like redbeard, if we're doing anything tournament/contest wise, Marie has to handle her own stuff, but if we're just out fishing, it's a team effort.

Again, I'm not bias either way.
If it's in writing then it's a rule.
If not in writing, it's just assumed or hearsay and not a rule.  With that nobody should get upset about it and let it bother them after the fact.

There are clearly some things that need to be dialed in well before the next ORC to make it the solid success that we all crave.
I agree there should be some NWKA based ORC standards that flow from one ORC to the next, stay in writing, maintained and upheld through the years.

Lee and the Red Beards are definitely doing the write thing in their tandems based on their experience with other NWKA contests with or without a rule in writing.  Very commendable.

Heck, sometimes I can't even get my left hand to work with my right hand and I'm the only one in my kayak.  Serious handicap!
This years winner is a newbie and probably has never had that come across as the norm.

Rules outlining these kind of things will be more explicit next year for sure.

As well as those that are clearly written and need to be adhered to more for safety than anything else.
Such as to DQ those that choose to ignore the proper Oregon ocean immersion gear.

Yes, I saw way too many folks in shorties, and T' shirts out there again this year.
The morning check in crew, and or the safety boats should have made this happen at some point.

Next years ORC should only get better with all the passion here.  8)

I think we need to put an asterix next the winners name on the trophy plaque?  Kind of like the asterix next to the PED assisted home run records of the late 90's.

*Mom landed his fish.  ::)

All joking aside, unassisted landing should have been in the rules, but it was left out.   Good for him for following the current rules as stated and making sure he did everything possible so that his prize fish didn't get away.

Can we get a rule that prohibits John Hayashibara from pressuring anglers into swigging Jameson at the campground?  ;D
