Took my son fishing off Whiskey Gulch Saturday.  Launched a few hours ahead of Low slack.  Saw Jeff and Sarah, but other than that, there was only one other car in the parking lot.

Foggy foggy foggy.  Need to be better prepared.  Had my batteries died on my phone, it would not have been a good situation.

We managed a limit of four halibut at 10, 25, 35, and 60 pounds.  We also managed a coho while trolling in.  We had three good strikes and saw both of the fish that came off and they were silvers.  Two of them were caught 50 ft from shore in 15 ft of water!

We also were surprised...no freaked out by a humpback whale that surfaced fifty yards away from us.  It was massive!!!  Just as I was commenting that we were going to get rocked by the wake of the first whale, a smaller whale surfaced within 25 yards of us!  Wow!!  Got the heart pumping for sure!!!

Well it was 50 inches on the dot.  60.3 pounds on the weight length chart.  My son is 75 pounds so not quite his own weight.  We can leave that challenge for the next time!

I changed up the gear a little.  12/0 big river hook followed by a gamakatsu 4X strong 4/0 treble hook.  Crimped it on to the 200 pound mono leader.  Worked great.  Though it would have been pretty hard to release any fish.  But good thing I did that because two out of four fish were caught on the treble hook.  The big one took everything.

No wind, great day except there was 15 minutes of panic when my GPS seemed to be pointing me in every which direction.  Need back up compass or something for days like this.

Still very proud of my son who did a great job getting the fish to the kayak!  He out fishes me again!!!!!

Another great video Rudy.. ...Congrats to Ryu. He handled that like a champ. Nice teamwork on the catch.

Love the "coaching job" . You crack me up..I think you were as excited as your son was. Very cool.

Thanks for sharing with us all.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

That was BAD ASS Rudy!  Ryu handled that bad boy like a champ.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who misses the poon shot once in a while  ;D

Nice job Ryu!  It looks like your kid is taking all your fish mojo, Rudy.  At least you are keeping it in the family.

How far did you guys go out and what depth did you start catching butt?

We went south. In 50 ft of water on the anchor point shelf.  He hooked this one. Then I handed him the other rod and instantly connects again.

I managed two myself!!! And a coho!  But yah, the kid is out fishing me.  I think I am a little concerned about that.

Went out with Jeff and he had a mushy halibut so take a good look at any scrawny ones.

Ryu - you ROCK.   Congrats on your Amazing fish - you can say you caught a larger halibut than most of us did this year!   I am inspired to go back out this next weekend and see if I can't get one like it!

Nice VID Rudy.  Did you get any shots of the whales ?
