First happy new year to everyone!    Wishing the entire Kayak Fishing community a great and safe year!

Looks like my year is off to a slow start now, though, as I broke a couple ribs rafting and am having trouble lifting any kind of weight over 20 lbs overhead.   This makes getting my Kayak onto my 6' high truck racks rather unlikely for the next 6 weeks.

Unless someone has a suggestion for alternate transport or load unloading hack that eliminates the 80 lb lift, side crunch, twisting motion.... I am guessing the title says it and I am going to be sidelined for a month at least.   Last thing I want to do is re-break the ribs - it's miserable enough for 6 weeks, 12 weeks would really suck.

Sorry to hear that! Maybe just load that kayak onto a trailer? If you don't own one, uhaul rents them for under 30$ a day. Just a thought in case some good fishing reports come rolling in. Get better soon!

Just forgo kayaking until your ribs are good.  If you happen to dump yourself in the drink, healing ribs are not going to help you in a self rescue.  Take the time and pre tie rigs, clean and organize your tackle, service your reels, respool line as needed, sharpen your filet knives, charge/change batteries in anything you fish with that takes batteries like head lights, flashlights, cameras, fish finder, strobe, VHF.  Inspect and replace any latex gaskets on drysuit/drytop.

That should keep you busy for a day or two or longer if you make a point to lollygag.  Be sure to hydrate often.  Beer works well for this.

The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

I hope you have a speedy recovery, AKRider!  Too many of my Army buddies are constantly or permanently broken because they were too hard headed to just take the time needed to fully recover.  Treat your body right.  The fish will be there when you're ready to go again.  You're not missing much anyway, it's only January!

LOL - beer hydration - I love it.   No, I really love it, but I think I had better be rather careful or my 'hydration' will cause me to outgrow my drysuit if I am not active !

Good idea to strip down and rebuild / clean all my reels and such - knowing cook inlet silt and sand I am sure I have some work to do there to avoid a nasty surprise as the halibut return to inshore waters !    If anyone has tips/tricks for AVET rebuilds/service i'd like to hear them.   I have several Avet SX reels that I should strip down and I dont think I have ever done them - so not sure if there are any critical lessons learned or how-to guides I should read/watch.

Thanks for the well wishes - you guys have to get after them for me while I make space in my freezer !

Maybe we should just do a reel service day... I can bring my Avet over, we can have a beer and tear reels apart.

Yeah - that sounds like a win.   I am getting some fresh reel/drag grease and corrosion-X on order today.   I may also just make a guess that I'll need at least one drag washer / "brake pad" as titled by AVET.   I think one of mine is going to have a bunch of salt / silt in it.

That's a bummer.  I had surprise abdominal surgery right before the new year (apparently scar tissue from a decades old appendectomy can "grab" your lower intestine and block traffic in both directions until removed), and the first thing I thought of when the surgeon was going over my recovery timeline was hoisting my 14' pro angler up onto my rack.  Best of luck with the ribs, man...I can empathize!

Speedy recovery Doc!   And thanks.   Just hoping I can get through the next 2 weeks or so with minimal number of coughs or sneezes.    Man does a sneeze HURT when you've got bum ribs.
