Okay dumb question here, I know nothing about radios....I have a set of cobra uhf "walkie talkies" if I was to take one of these out on the water would I be able to communicate with anyone? Or would I need an actual vhf marine radio?

I think most of us have the VHF radios, the derby broadcasts on VHF and you log in with them on VHF. I use UHF when messing around talking to my wife sometimes when on the water though.

Okay that's what I figured, looks like I can get a decent one for around $100. Thanks for the reply

I'll be there. I plan to head down early Friday and do a pre-fish that afternoon to square away any gear and rigging issues as this will be my first time out in my new rig.

I tried to find a hotel today and the dates for the Derby are sold out. I'll try again later I guess as I expect some rooms will go back on the market as people change their plans. I planed to go down for the 17th through the 20th.

I'm roughing it and sleeping on a cot in the back of my truck. If the roads around E.R. weren't so doggone icy, I'd drag the travel trailer down and have plenty of space for a few more fellas.

I may join in if ARK has my Hobie in before tournament day.  I've been taking it easy on the mileage in my paddle kayak thanks to some shoulder problems.

Gonna try and make it....a place to stay is the only issue at the moment but I have slept many nights in the Tahoe so that will be my backup.

Are we all trying to meet up before hand or the morning of?

I don't have a problem with that. Always fun to get out and go fishing.
