Yeah...no....don't quit your day job there coastie.   Metal working is my "happy place" and do my best work without distraction.  We would distract the hell out of each other with general chit chat.  8)

I've had this setup for years. I don't tow anything yet but the yaks only extend about 18" past my tailgate. It's a Yakima system. Truck racks, 66" crossbars (I think) and hulley rollers front and back. I've had mulch and gravel dumped between the uprights with no issues so far ...

That setup is a beauty !

Does that system have any mechanism to lock it to the truck ?  They are pretty spendy.
I could drill a couple of holes and secure things better, but,  I haven't had any issues with theft or folks messing with things. I'm usually camped right next to my rig or I show up the morning of an event.

I think I've found the solution to the locking problem: red loctite. Yeah, Mr. Meth might have a leatherman or a crescent wrench, but I bet he doesn't have a torch or soldering iron to heat the clamp bolt !

So I'm now more comfortable with a clamp secured system. And I spent a few minutes at Rack Attack afore rawkfish's speech at NA t'other night and know once I have the rack selected I'm going with the Yakima Sweet Roll on the crossbars.

Oh yeah, I almost bought them there in the moment, and oh yeah, it occurred to me to shop them elsewhere. So I did. I can save maybe $20 through Amazon. But I'm going back and getting it from them once I have the rack installed, because they provided the expertise and the hands-on examination of the product so they earned the sale with their service. And it's about a 10% thing. If it were like 25%, I would probably feel the service wasn't worth that premium. But with the price that close, yeah I'll pay extra to the guy who helped in person.

Whelp, I've been here before and had to return a rack (the half-rack ladder jobbie from HFT which couldn't possibly be mounted in my truck).

But I've "decided" and ordered a this  rack system: http://www.amazon.com/Workstar-Aluminum-Pickup-Utility-Ladder/dp/B00WNAYC68?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00.

It's less than 3 bills, should accept the Yakima Sweet Rolls that I also have on order.

Shannon made a compelling case, but I added it up and it was like $100 materials plus the gas to get to G'baldi, before you factor in the value of time/labor/frustration. And this thing is aluminiuminum, so I doesn't has to worry about rust.

I'm gonna red loctite the threads and take my chances. Maybe make use of all those gun locks I..... found in a shopping cart...somewhere.

I have to say I was disappointed with the techs at etrailer. When I asked about locking a non-Yakima rack (Yakima clamps have a lock you can put on that prevents access to the bolt head) I was pretty much pooh-poohed, that nobody ever shows up at a parking lot with a leatherman and pulls a $750 rack off a truck, I should be more trusting, etc. And when I asked about using loctite the response was "Oh NOES !!! If you ever try to remove it, you might damage the rack. Or the truck. Or the Ozones Layer !" until I pointed out that all you have to do it apply a soldering iron to the bolt for about 60-90 seconds, then he was like "well, if you know what you're doing, there's no problem".

Soooooo glad the tech assumes I'm an internet meatball.

Which I am, but I know how to handle loctite.

Anyways. This will all arrive sometime next week, and probably not in time to get it put on before the HoW dealie next weekend.

So I may skip that event, get my rack done on Saturday, and look for someone who wants to be my seeing eye dog on the Willy out of Sellwood that Sunday.

Thanks to Shannon for his unwavering support, and everyone else for their ideas and offers. Shannon, Imma let you put some coastie graffiti on it with a Sharpie so you know you contributed !

Look what Santa brought !

Not bolted down tight yet. Gonna tighten everything up, remeasure, then loctite the shit out of the fixed bolts. May even sweat-solder them.

Ain't nobody taking it without a sawzall and a blowtorch.

Sweetrolls still in transit.
