Well, we just got the sand off the waders from the uber successful HOW Clam Slam, time to start planning for the next event. April 30th is one of our biggest and most popular events of the year, The Gilbert River Sturgeon Rodeo.

We are going to make this a little larger than we have in the past thanks to support from the NWest Chapter. We're going to shoot for between 15-20 participants so we are going to need some volunteer assistance.

Volunteers will be meeting out on Sauvie Island at 08:00 with participants arriving at 09:00. We'll gear them up, go fish for a few hours, have lunch, go fish some more and call it a day around 3:30.

Our HOW chapter strives to hold at least one event per month during the season. The exception is May, as Mother's Day, Memorial Day, and halibut opener are blocked out on a lot of calendars. So after the Sturgeon Rodeo we won't be back online until the Bonneville Bass Bonanza III on June 4th.

Come join us in the fun and laughter and help some Heroes do battle with some prehistoric beasts.

Volunteer List:
SamM
Mojo
Nate
Snarf
NDogg
cdat
Craig
iairj84 (and wife)

Having never been a part of a HOW event in the past... What are you looking for in volunteers?

Looking forward to it - I keep missing out on this one due to softball and birthday's - looks like the calendar is clear this year!

Having never been a part of a HOW event in the past... What are you looking for in volunteers?

Generally, I think a pulse is required - but nobody's ever checked me and they keep letting me help out!

Seriously though, they are generally looking for people to hop in and help out, in whatever fashion you can.  Usually, that comes with unloading trailer(s), setting up fishing gear, configuring kayaks, setting up and preparing lunch, assisting our veterans with whatever they might need help with (safety gear, kayak, fishing gear, etc), fishing, listening, socializing...  You don't even have to be very good at any of those, and they still let you come help out (again, I'm evidence of that)!

As many of us have brought up in the past, this is great way to give back to multiple communities.  Mostly, it's helping a great group of guys/gals that have given for our country, enjoy a nice day on the water.  In addition, I see it as a chance to give back to the kayak fishing community as a whole...

All of what SamM said plus you have to have fun, basically were there as volunteers to show the veterans a good, relaxing , safe, and fun time. If we catch a fish it's a bonus. It really is nice to have 1-1 vet/volunteer ratio but you might have two guys your helping on the water.

I also meant to reply to Barb's post on the clam dig, when she was concerned about her lack of experience targeting mollusks.

Your general knowledge of specific fisheries is always appreciated, but at the root level of what we do we need proficient and adequately equipped waterfolk.  We need need volunteers that are equipped to handle themselves and watch over 1-2 more. As well as be equipped to relay emergency info (have a charged VHF), throw bag, first aid kit,. Red Cross CPR and FIRST AID certs are good too.

I am not sure if I can do the full day and I may have the little man with me,  but count me in, at least for shore duty.

Hmmm...   Been a while.  Guess it's time look into re-upping the training...

So you're saying 2 volunteers from the ndogg family with sturgeon catching experience...

Pretty much, but lil' Sam is not allowed on a kayak and tends to be pretty needy.

Thanks for following up.  I'll look for future events where I can volunteer.
