Caught my biggest 'but yet fishing with the Plastic Navy on Saturday. If the trend continues I'm on my way to my goal of a 60# fish when the big ones come in in the fall.

I caught a couple of smaller fish jigging, but the two bigger fish I caught were picked up trolling a herring/hoochie behind a triangle flasher 3' off bottom. This one that I kept had 2" crabs in its stomach.

Nice job guys and gal. Looks like a blast. I'd like to try the float to anchor point one day. Looks like a lot of beach at low tide. I'm also curious about the capsized kayaker....I'm gonna guess it was a sit-in style. That seems to be the trend with the recent mishaps. Once you swamp one of those you're pretty much done for. Which is why mine have been hanging on my garage wall for the last 3 years.

Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga except I get to kill something.

"...a lot of beach..."

- YUP !

We rode the outbound into the wind, so had a fair amount of time on the water, but the tide was inbound by the time we were on sand.   It is a very long beach at AP at low tide, so the lesson learned here is that we should have brought the wheels along so that we didn't have to drag them several times up the beach while waiting/going for the truck.

'WE' means Kat and I - stayed to keep them dry while the others caught a lift  back to WG.   I think we could have beached a bit farther down -beyond the sand spit south of the AP Launch, an extra 1/2 mile on the water and driving the beach might have been easier in the end.

I wasn't able to learn anything more about the Kayaker that flipped at 11PM on Saturday and swam to Anchor Point.

great job everyone. That beach is a big reason I don't launch out of Anchor pt.  add breaking waves 100 yards off shore and it's ugly. but on a great day it sounds fun.

I too am curious about the kayak story. I had heard it was an outback. I know it's embarrassing bur I think it's important to discuss what happened and learn.

First I am VERY impressed, relieved, and happy that the person survived 5 hours in the water. So the person must have been prepared for immersion  so kudos for that.

Did the person take 5 hours because they were separated from it or because they couldn't re-enter and to swim the kayak back.

if the kayak is still on the water, I hope the coast guard was informed. they will freak if they see an empty kayak drifting around.

In my early years I made a rookie mistake and ended up in the water for 30 minutes or so....unfortunately in front of dozens of tourists on a seawall.

it ended up being this article.  Yah I'm not sure I wanted to publicize my mistaje, but if anyone else after made the same mistake after I did, I'd be bummed I didn't try to at least educate.

Everyone on this board right now is a pioneer of this great sport in Alaska. We dont need to be the aggressive safety police.  But, I'd like to encourage everyone to educate others, even if the situation like mine was a minor bruise to the ego.

I met the guy at WG on Sunday morning. I didn't ask him what happened, but his friend told me he fell off his Outback and got separated from it. Somehow, someone else found his kayak and returned it. His friend told me that the guy had been to Iraq and Afganhistan, and said being in that water for 5 hours was scarier than anything else he's been through!  I bet! The water was rough Sunday morning, so we didn't go out. He seemed in good spirits on Sunday. Pretty amazing.

thanks Kat. that was the vital piece of info I was looking for. I think a retractable leash system of some kind for me when I go solo is high on the consideration list.

being leashed to your kayak has huge negative issues like in surf landings or when a powerboat is bearing down on you.

But I've always been concerned about being separated from the kayak. I am always amazed how two outback will separate from each other once I let go of my kids kayak. now imagine an empty kayak and a body in the water. separation can be a lot faster.

something to think about for sure as I go solo a lot...

Yup, high wind will pull an empty kayak away pretty darned fast. It's great that he was dressed to survive in the water for that long. This is exactly the scenario that scares the heck out of me when I hear someone say they tried out their waders and rain jacket and didn't get too wet before they got back in the boat.

Lots of positive reports over the weekend helped motivate me to finish my chores around the cabin so I could fish WG this morning. Brought back one nice halibut and let several small ones go.

His name is Aaron. Spent Sunday fishing with him. He is going to be joining the team in the next day or so. He had an angel watching over him. Caught a wave after turning to come to shore and over he went. His life jacket was catching the side and stopped him from reentering. He was able to mount up side down for about ten mins.
I'll let him tell the rest of the story when he joins.

My WG experience Thursday mainly...

Daughter caught her first halibut off of any platform.  Not the most exciting video but its main for the grandparents and the kids a few decades from now.  lol.  Some good pics my daughter Saku took as well.

The video:

A few more pics courtesy of Saku.

Love the pictures and videos. Early last week my wife was asking me "Hey are there any more videos with the boy who caught that big salmon and was so excited???" She was referring to the video of Ryu from the king derby. She was excited to watch this one! Glad the whole crew were able to get out there and catch some fish!
