I'm getting ready for a couple weeks of vacation and hope to get to the coast for some salmon and bottom fish. Being new at kayaking in the ocean I was hoping to get any advise on decent launch sites near cape disappointment,  ocean shores, or any other open ocean launches within 4 hours of olympia. Also looking for anybody that wants to get after em between the 5th and the 12th of july...Really any day. I'm fishing  either my PA 12 or my PA 14 (depends on ease of launch). Please feel free to post any advice or send me a message if your interested in setting something up or willing to let me tag along on with you on an existing trip.

Thanks in advace, Aaron

Westport is the best spot in Grays Harbor to bottom fish. There are numerous posts if you do a search on this website regarding where to park and launch from. Keep an eye on conditions as they are constantly changing. I use pretty light gear. A trout pole and spinning Rod w/ 20 lb. mono. Good luck!  ;D

I mainly fish the caves just west of Sekui bay. Plenty of coho, kings and pinks on odd year hold there. Another good place is pillar point. water drops to 400 feet of depth and you only go out about half a mile.

Cape D is great for salmon and bottom fish! I'll be at the ORC until the 10th, but might be able to swing the 12th. Will let you know. Be mindful of current and boat traffic as that area can be rich in both. And be sure to stop by Buoy 10 Bait Co while down there. The owner Jim is a great dude who loves the idea of what we do, and he fires some of the best pizza around! Here's a vid I shot there last Aug.

If you're looking for salmon, I would advise that you steer clear of Cape D unless you are either going under the wing of someone who is experienced and knows the area very well, or you are someone who has had at least a few years of experience on a kayak fishing for salmon in heavy currents, unrelenting winds, and lots of boat traffic.  That area has a well-deserved reputation of being the most deadly river mouth on the west coast.

Good call Jeff. Had just read this myself. I had originally thought it opened July 1st with the ocean.

That surf launch is no joke. I rate it at expert level.
