I'd love to join next week (assuming that my cold will be over by then - i am a little under the weather at the moment).

One problem: I have never crabbed or fished for rockfish before.

I think i am ready for the crabbing part (and have all the gear needed for it), but could use some advise on the rockfishing (what bait or lures/jigs, weights etc?)

Thanks!

Tackle for Tillamook "taco sea bass":
Rod selection:::: nothing usually over 12 inch so trout rods offer the most fun, there is a slight chance at a lingcod if there in the bay but very slim chance if you wanted to bring bigger gear.
You want crappie rigs:::they have a swivel on top to hook to your snap swivel on the main line, followed by two spreader bars to put bait hooks on, with a snap swivel at the bottom to hook your weight to.
Your bait::: Barkley Gulp minnows/shad 2 sizes 2-1/2 and 3 to 4 inch in liquid filled bags (smelly is good) for fishing
Weights:::: You want jig heads in weight range from 1/2 oz to 3-4 oz

Rig the jig head with the larger bait and two smaller ones on the bait hooks hanging off the crappie rig.....but not till your on the water or they'll dry out  :banjo:

Edit:: fixed the pictures

Some iffy responses... I can only come if I finally catch a steelhead by then, or if the river conditions for steelhead fishing are really bad that day. So, I'll probably be there... hopefully [emoji6]

Where ya fishing for steel ? Wilson ? Trask ? Kilchis ?

All those fish go right past the top of the bay, 300 yards wide.

Are you launching from the launch in Garibaldi?  I can't commit yet,  but would love to go if things work out.

The put in behind the cleaning station is not easy, in my opinion.  It's a short distance from the parking lot, but you are carrying your yak and gear over slick, barnacle covered, ankle breaker rocks to get to the water.  We have done it, and put new scratches in the kayaks every time.  It's not something you want to do solo.  I prefer to wheel my yak down the boat ramp and into the water, fully geared up.  It's a bit further, but I think its easier.

Also, Shannon has the bait nailed.  The black rocks love the Gulp minnows, in any color and size.  I like to fish them one at a time because its very snaggy and weedy out there and you will lose plenty of gear.  1/4 - 1/2 oz round head, bullet head, stand up jig heads all work.  Bring some split shot too, just in case the current is moving through and you need some extra weight.  Light trout gear is about as much as you need out there.

Just my two cents.

We are hoping to be there, but watching the surf and swell forecast, which is calling for big swells at the moment.

Also if you want CHEAP rockfish lures and are passing through Portland area grab 2 or 3 packs of these shrimp flies from Fish Field. http://fishfield.com/home/344-fish-field-shrimp-flies.html?search_query=Shrimp+flies&results=13

You're not likely to catch much other than Rockfish with them, but they work super well and are less than $.50 a piece. Mojo's rigs would be great too.

Edit: To add these are unweighted so you would need to weigh them down with a sinker. easy to do, however mojo's rig is all in one...

Larger swells with light rain 5 mph light variable winds we should be good staying on the south wall and if it's looking too swelly to play perch fishing or bring your SRC & steelhead gear and reveal a secret spot.
