All the forecast sites I've read are painting this Sunday as a potential ocean opportunity: 3-5 foot WNW swell @ 14 seconds, light winds.  Not glass, but not blown out either.  With steelhead season over, I want to pull on something other than redtail perch.  I was thinking Depoe Bay could be worth a look.  Anyone interested?  I've never fished there before, but I'm anxious to get my kayak wet with something besides rain and maybe take home a lingcod or two.

I think Depoe will be good on Sunday. I'll be in PC looking to get out, if you feel like driving another hour.

I could potentially be game for that.  But I wasn't sure what surf size is considered launch-able at PC.  I'm not looking to fill the freezer or break a record this weekend, I just want to pull on some RF/lings and get back in the kayak saddle.

If the forecast holds, how many times have I said that, I'll be at PC on Sunday.
Approximately 0600, sunrise is at 0630.
Plenty of time to make the call and head to Depoe Bay if required.

Yeah, sometimes it's the swell other times the wind.  I was out couple weeks ago for all of 10 minutes; pretty flat but really strong offshore winds.

I'll try to post something Saturday night from PC to give an idea if swell looks likes its laying down.

Depoe is a great option in that 6-8 ft range with lighter winds.  Check out the salty dog threads on Ifish to get an idea if power boats are heading out of depoe on Sunday.

I generally just go surfing if the swell is too much.

Right on, thanks for the info guys.  I see that PC is only a little over 1.5 hours from me, so if the conditions are looking gravy for it I'd be down to meet up there.  Otherwise, Depoe is on my way back home so it could be my fall-back.

Onefish, I'd really appreciate if you did post something Saturday night describing conditions at PC!

Much appreciated. Right now it's looking like Saturday might be the better day, with the forecast still firming up. Any intel is appreciated.

I really have been missing PC but might head to Depoe Bay this time depending on how things shape up.

Without being too forward (not that there's any other way to ask this)... if anyone is going out on Saturday, I would love to go along.  I've got all the necessary gear, just no experience on the ocean.
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

Ok we'll see what the forecast and web cam look like tomorrow tentatively hit Pc at 0600 Saturday if it's a no go Tillamook Bay low tide is 1030ish so plenty of time to get ready for a bay launch.

What sites are you guys getting your forecasts from?  I ask because the ones I've looked at (Stormsurf, Magic Seaweed, SolSurf) all paint Sunday as calmer than Saturday.  Magic Seaweed says Saturday will have a 4-6 foot primary swell with a 3-5 foot secondary, and the chance for strong S winds after noon.  Meanwhile, Sunday is forecast for 3-5 foot primary, 1-2 foot secondary, and light winds all day.

Pretty crappy day here in PC, but the swell is only 3-4 ft.  I'm feeling pretty good about both days.  Last time I checked that sec swell for Sunday was pretty north and fading with light winds.  No need for first light launch either.

I look at magic seaweed and Surfline as well as NOAA buoy info.

I'll be out Sunday but I'm leaning towards Depoe Bay. Keep safe and have fun everyone! If I end up at PC hopefully I'll bump into some of you.

Same here.  The surf between Yachats and Waldport is pretty mellow this morning, but still looks a tad choppy.

Nice, I'll probably just head to Depoe on Sunday too.  It's a shorter drive and seems like a good place to get re-acclimated to the salt (I haven't been on the ocean since October) without having to worry about a potentially sporty surf launch.  I would think this early in the season, there should be some nice lings up in the shallows.

Would it be worth bringing any salmon trolling gear out this early in the year?  Or would I be wasting my time?
