I'm looking for a versatile and stable cart for my heavy Wilderness Systems kayak.  I'd like one that could be used on pavement, sand, and everything in between.  I'd also like one that would hold up well out in the elements, since I want to store my kayak on it to keep the kayak off the ground.

Thanks,
Cannon

Welcome Cannon,

I can't recommend wheeleez kayak beach carts enough.  Yes they are expensive, but worth every penny.   With there large balloon tires these carts are the only ones I've seen do well on sand (and they don't do bad on harder substrates either).

http://www.wheeleez.com/canoe-kayak-cart.php#kcb

They also come in less expensive mini-cart but for a T160 you'd really want the full sized cart.

I think some of the local kayak shops might carry them or you can order them online.

Hi Cannon, Welcome to NWKA.

Everything that B said. A few years ago I shelled out the cash for a large WheelEz beach cart and it's been a trooper through it all. It works over all surfaces and absolutely rules over sand.

Thanks guys -- nice to be here.  What PDX shops have the best assortment of kayak gear?

I would first check with Outdoorplay (an NWKA sponsor) but I don't believe they carry them.  Member "Alkasazi" works there and would know more.

Alder Creek has a really nice assortment of kayak gear, but I don't remember if they carry Wheeleez.  NWKA member "JSelf" works there and might be able to answer that.

Other possible locations to check out would be NextAventure or simply ordering them from the Wheeleez website.

I picked up my Roll Ez at Next Adventure. This is the same cart, I believe, but with hard rubber wheels instead of the balloon wheels. It works fantastic everywhere except soft sand. They have them on sale a couple of times each year.

I've been trying to get a group discount with Wheeleez but somehow it keeps getting dropped.  Let me send a couple more emails and see what can be done.

Unfortunately, we don't carry Wheeleez. I use a Paddleboy Scupper Pup cart, It does great on most surfaces, and good in packed sand, but does struggle in deeper sand. The Wheeleez I saw at Pacific City seemed to do well, and I've heard good things about them from guys here & other places. If Next or Alder Creek have them, both those shops are good places to start. I'll see about getting them added to our lineup for this spring.

This is one of the items I am desparately trying to pick during the holidays this year.  There are so many places around Seattle that you really need a cart to make it to the water.  (Richard- I am never doing that portage w/o a cart again)

Does anyone have a picture of how the Wheeleez fits in the front hatch of a P13?  This is one of my major hold-ups, aside from the price.

I have also been seriously considering the C-Tug (NRS & Outdoor Play Have them.)  It breaks down small, the plastic composite is tougher than thin wall aluminum tubing, and its ~$50 cheaper than the Wheeleez.  Since 98% of my days will not require me to deal with loose-sand beaches I don't think sand floatation ability is a deal breaker for me.

Being the chp bsd that I am, a discount would be great.

Amos, my young nuclear friend, that wasn't a portage, that was an obscenely long drag, both uphill and down!! a few more of those and i'd have had my total physical fitness workout for the next 3 years!

if you are budget minded [ who isnt ?] don't forget the little girl of yak carts, molly... you can find her over on the paddleboy site. she folds up and breaks down for hatch insertion real nice  personally, i'm leaning towards the C-tug. i like that ugly green monster.  ;D

If anyone is looking for one of these ...

I'd be willing to part with a used one for $50 ($100 retail).  It may be missing an o-clip on one of the wheels.  If that's the case, I'll sell it for $45.  I can't remember if I fixed this, but I know I have the o-clip somewhere (but would have no clue where  ::) ).  Straps not included ... I blew those out long ago.

This is the first of many in the upcoming polepole garage sale.  If you're in need of something, post up a wanted in the classifieds.  I may just have it and not want to move it down to San Jose.  Prolly gonna put some kayaks up for sale, and paddles, PFD's, rod holders, and more.

Keep me in mind for the paddles!  :)

Keep me in mind for the paddles!  :)

I think I'll have an Ocean Kayak Magic paddle and a Carlisle Enchantment fiberglass paddle, both lightly used.  I'll check inventory next time I'm up in Seattle and will post up in the Classifieds.  Will probably sell for around 50% of MSRP.  Let me know if you're interested in either of these.

Good point Richard, it just makes me feel better to call it a portage.  I haven't had a real one since my Boundary Waters trip years ago.

I looked at the Molly, but many of the reviews complained about its structural integrity/ shape retention under load... basically the cart bows under the weight of a loaded SOT kayak and the tires get a nasty negative camber.  :-\
