Great pix!! And blue skies, haven't seen much of that up here in Puget Sound.
How are greenling for the frying pan---good tasting??

I agree, kt, great pix! I especially like RoyJan3009[1].jpg. The blue water and sky, the foam, the guy in the kayak holding up his lingcod bait... great photo!
Greenling are excellent! Nice, firm fillets (when iced immediately). Plus, they're almost all meat! Great for fish tacos!

- Karl

PS, I'm going to have to burn some vacation and make a trip to the south Oregon coast!

Ah, Iced immediately....good idea...

You mean the guy that never remembers to bring gear for bait fishing...... :BangHead: guess i could have stuck him on jig head, but he was so cute...

And i've mentioned this before, but if any regular wants to come down and fish and don't want to drive two ways, or just wanna fish a couple days , your welcome to crash at my house, lot's of parking and floor space, you might wake up with a dog sleeping with ya, but small price to pay for some good fishin.Save some money for beverages and the like... It's a long ten minute drive to Sunset from my house.
See ya on the water..

Alright, I'm in! I'll start watching the extended forecasts. Likewise, if you see a good combo of weather and tides setting up, let me know and I'll hit the road heading south. Staying at your place will save me a bundle in fuel since I won't have to tote my truck camper down there.

OH, did i forget, only non AOTY entrants are welcome.....

Kidding, of course.. ;D  Look forward to fishing with ya, Karl. I'll keep my eyes on the forecast too.. We will have to have a fish fry with Ralph's beer batter..MM MM good!!

Tides are way less important then the conditions obviously. I don't even look at the tides, if the swell is down, i'm going.
We got the noon switch for wind down here alot , so thats always a consideration too.

Spot, It "was" Yummy...... Been years since i've had Cabbie, forgot how much it shrinks, It's like a shrinky dink..A tasty one!!
See ya on the water..

Don't worry, CBY, I'm hardly an AOTY threat. Once the spring thaw hits I'll be spending most of my free time working on the house we're building near Okanogan, WA.

I've lived up here so long that I tend to forget that tides aren't as big of an issue in other places. Here, if I'm heading out, say to the San Juan Islands for a little bottom fishing, tides are a huge factor. I look for 3-4 foot swings over several hours. The weaker currents allow me to keep my jigs in contact with the bottom for longer periods of time. Plus, I avoid big tide swings because their strong currents flowing against a stiff breeze can generate some wicked standing waves.

Fish fry? Oh damn, now I'm hungry! Now I have to go root around in the fridge for something that won't come remotely close to a fish fry :BangHead:

And if the ocean conditions turn on us, no biggie. There are so may other options down there. I used to live at Saunder's Lake so that would be one cool alternative.

Looking forward to meeting the south coast crew!

Good pics Merlin, Shows the chop a little better. It was rougher then it looked from the pics.

This newly ordained "old salt" reverted back to seasick kid today. The big swell doesn't get me like the cross chop, coming from two directions, that's a killer.

Roy, lookin forward to meeting you this summer----am retiring from 28 years working at the VA in Seattle in May.  Fish on!!!!!!!!!!
Went out and bought some spinning gear for trout/bass/walleye yesterday, grew up in Mich fishing perch/pike/trout but have not fished the lakes since I moved out here in 1981 (salmon fever took hold!).  Things have changed a LOT----we used canned corn and a lantern to catch trout in lakes at night , and used weedless dardevls  for pike, worms for everything else.

Way to go guys.  Looks like a nice day and some good fish.  Good to see some kayak fishing going on.  Z might be the guy to stick close to at Moutcha Bay (Moutcha Bay Mojo?), but GD is sure lighting up AOTY 2009.

How'd ya do Paul?
By the time I got there Friday everyone else was out to the water so I paddled out by myself. Went north toward the lighthouse. Instead of dragging my yak across the inner sand bar to my fishing spot (the safe thing to do) I thought I'd cut through a slot in the barrier rocks. Bad idea. I got 2/3 of the way through then got to the hard part (committed, no room or time to turn around). The sets were coming over the rock a bit & I had to time my exit out the other side. In other words, I had to hold up, then paddle like hell. I was rockin & rollin enough to have my favorite dive knife pop out of the sheath into the drink. Better my knife than me. Won't do that again if it's over a 2 ft swell.

Anyway, made it to the other side a little rattled, but in one piece (minus the knife). The water was clear enough to see the bottom in about fifteen ft of water. Caught 4 fish in about an hour, 2 keepers. Dragged my yak across the sand bar & paddled back to Sunset.

Can you get into the light house area from the out side (open ocean) or do you have to cross the bar or go through the slot?
Sorry to hear about your knife, but glad it wasn't worse. That makes two poles and a knife lost at Sunset in one day.....kind of makes the area seem worse then it is.
Enjoy the ride!

Yea, just paddle out and in between that one surge rock and main rocks. Easy, and we can just keep on going to Baltimore rock.... :walk:
