Which ever spot you want to try I'm up for it. Florance is a little bit of a drive for me but I don't care. Which spot is our best luck to catch a fish! Less power boat traffic up north I think!

I doubt if there will be any power boat traffic in either location. I don't mind the 3 mile paddle at Winchester  bay. It's a greater drive for you two, for either place. I'm good for whatever you guys want to do.

I'd like to check out the Suislaw, but due to monetery constraints, gonna have to stick to Winchester this time. Pedaddling is free...

Let's see, friday high tide is about 2:30 PM. I'm thinking  put in about 10:30-11:00??

Do you know where the Coast guard station is in Winchester Zac? The launch is there. turn left like your going to windy cove then turn right  and go along the inside of the harbor past all the restaurants and stores. Turn left after the tackle shop, you'll see a bathroom on the right, just after that is the launch.

You gonna try to get some sand shrimp? I'll try too also, even though i don't really know how.. gonna get herring also.

See ya on the water..

Hopefully the weather will lighten up a little. It's miserable here in Florence today. Cold(39 degrees), rainy, and windy. At least the rain might bring some fish into the river!

High tide for windy bay on Friday is at 2:55pm. That means it won't reach high tide until about 3:30 up river where we fish. I am thinking that more of a noonish launch might be better, perhaps after lunch. I am working until 11:30 Thursday night, and also need time to run the furkids in the morning. I can always catch up with you guys later if you want to get out earlier.

Just checked Magic Seaweed. Forecast for Friday shows temps in the hi 30s and light snow showers. The good news is light wind from the east. Might be too cold for sturgeon to bite. Any fish biologists have an opinion on this!

Water temperature tends to lag behind air temperature and fish don't care about air temperature.  So, if it has been warm out and it suddenly gets cold outside, chances are the water temp will still be warm and the fish active.  Likewise, one warm day won't do much to wake fish up if the water is cold.

In more technical terms, water has a higher specific heat capacity than air.  If I remember correctly it takes about 4 times as much energy to raise the temperature of water than it does air (based on equal masses of air and water and equal increases in temperature).

Most of the speculation I've heard about short term atmospheric events triggering changes in fish behavior have usually suggested that it was not the actual temperature change, but the atmospheric pressure change that effected the fish.

My guess is that in shallow water fish probably can feel temperature changes. I know that when I stand in front of a window on a cold night, I can feel the radiative heat loss through the window. I suspect that fish can feel the same sort of contrasts. In the winter, on the river, I do much better when the air temperature is above the water temperature.

Ok, we can do noon. Give it more time to warm up a little. hope the weather cooperates. A little rain won't bother me but if it's rainy and windy, forget it.

Now were getting into thermal mass which is a function of specific heat capacity and the mass of the object.  In other words, less water mass means quicker temperature change.  For example, a shallow pond will freeze well before a deep lake at the same air temperatures.

This weather isn't looking too promising. The weather underground says light rain. Good thing is the wind is supposed to be light also and about 45 degrees. Dave, I'll call you about 10 AM so we can make our final decision.

You're not going out on the Ocean and the wind is light... so what's the deal with worrying about a little light rain and above freezing temperatures?
