You're not going out on the Ocean and the wind is light... so what's the deal with worrying about a little light rain and above freezing temperatures?

I was wondering about this, too??!

Apparently, those South Coasties are a sensitive bunch, and spoiled by their temperate climate. :whip2:

Weather systems and in particular pressure changes have a lot to do with fishing. Major fluctuations in either direction are not great, nor are systems that sit on the extremes, like those bluebird high pressure systems that often sit over us in the winter, great weather to fish but not the best for catching. I'll take a moderately/steady rising or falling baro any day.
Air temp not so much in the short term, BUT the temp of the falling rain does matter if we get cold rain (rain in the 30's or low to mid 40's) it will affect water temps compared to a warm rain (mid 40's +) It can raise the temp of a river like the Clackamas as much as 2-5 deg in as many days, Mostly due to the temp of the surface runoff reaching the main river through feeder streams. If a 1/2 inch of cold rain hits a watershed it will affect the water temp.

I have seen this many times in my log book as I record air and water temp in addition to more specific  weather data and can see the changes from say a thursday to a sunday in river temps in relation to the weather we had.

These are my theories and observations so they are worth what you paid for them.. ;D

But the window before a change in the weather can be awesome.  The window can be hot as the fish go on the chew, but it can be a short window too.

This weather isn't looking too promising. The weather underground says light rain. Good thing is the wind is supposed to be light also and about 45 degrees. Dave, I'll call you about 10 AM so we can make our final decision.

You're not going out on the Ocean and the wind is light... so what's the deal with worrying about a little light rain and above freezing temperatures?

I'm not going out on the ocean cause of the 20+ foot waves...And  It's barely above freezing, like 43 degrees.... ::)
See ya on the water..

I didn't say you were going out in the ocean.  I was pointing out that if you're not going into the ocean and the wind is light, then weather generally shouldn't be an issue.

43 degrees sounds tropical to me. I think I'll be wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, this weekend. 8)

I'm gonna have to ask you guys to publicly retract those statements!!.... We went fishing, and We froze our bal... err, our butt's off !!....... ;) ;)

Damn it was cold !!... Zac and I fished the Rocky Point hole on the Coquille river for about 3 hours. Didn't even get a bite, except for frost.... Water temp was 43.5 degrees, the air temp felt colder. I guess it's too cold. we tried shrimp and herring in 20-40 feet of water, in the hole and on the sides of the hole, nothing was working today. We need a warmer rain storm bad....

See ya on the water..

Cold but fun. I need to do some homework on fishing for sturgeon in the coastal area. When I lived in Idaho I fished Hells Canyon a lot and never had a day with no fish! Do they move in and out between the ocean and river?      Zac

Yes, they do migrate out to ocean.  It is thought that most of the sturgeon we see in the Puget Sound region are actually of Columbia River stock, just migrating.  It wouldn't surprise me if the oregon coast ones are the same. I've heard the bigger ones indeed migrate out to the ocean for the winter and "run" back in the spring/summer.  But we don't seem to get the oversized ones in Puget Sound so the smaller ones must wander as well as they are here year round.  I'm guessing those Idaho ones would too if it weren't for all the dams in the way.

Roy, I am still cold! Fished Munsel lake this afternoon. I was the only boat on the lake, not even shore fisherman. Apparently, the stocking was postponed this week. Probably because of the frick'n cold weather.
I trolled a worm for over an hour, even tried fishing some deep holes, not a single bite. The northeast wind was brutal! It was nice just getting out for a paddle. The back side of the lake was mostly out of the wind, and it felt good just communing with nature. Maybe we can give sturgeon a try next week!

There is a lot of talk recently how the sturgeon bite in Tillamook Bay is almost absent this winter.  I wonder if all the coastal sturgeon are off doing other things this winter.
