I just found and re-read this article to cheer my self up.

http://www.nwmitchell.com/personal/bottomfish/bottomfishingnewport.htm

This is something I'm interested in because it bypasses a surf launch and looks like good fishing structure.  The boat ramp at the back of the harbor is only a quarter mile from the fishable water.  Has anyone launched in Depoe Bay at the day park and then fished outside?

Also there are some real good photos of fishing rigs which would work well on Northwest bottom fishing anywhere.

I have fished it several times, lots of good structure in the area.  Just be careful going through the hole, there is no room for a mistake.  You can do a clearance check on the vhf before heading through.

I think they use vhf channel 80 at the harbor there.

Here's some more info on Depoe Bay, including some navigation instructions.

Thought I would add this - many may have already found this, but for those who haven't, it's a good one to bookmark. It's a webcam image of the Depoe Harbor mouth every 30 min. I just wish they cleaned the lens more, but it's understandable with all that spray from those rocks.

Wow, that looks like a rush to get through! Looks like it needs to be a small surf day or really good timing to make it in a kayak. Any good stories on launching here?

I went through all the pics yesterday and it didn't seem as though there were many breaks, only a lot of boiling on each side of the channel. Although I'm sure there's probably a good surge at the very least depending on the sea state. Hey PP, when you fished Depoe, what were the seas like? Have you come up with a swell height that's manageable or a limit where it's not really safe for a 'yak? I guess the direction of the swells might also be a major consideration.

its a straight paddle into the ocean, no breaks, at least on any day a sane person would go out.  Your biggest pucker factor is getting run over by a PB.  Tons of great fishing nearby, but since it is near a port you will have company. The Depoe Bay Dan post is great. Lots of perfect info for a beginner to start with.  If a guy was just to fish white and black and white and blue swimbaits for bottomfish you would do great.

Dang!  I thought I was the only one who knew where to find this that post by DBD!   ;D

I have a copy I saved on my PC and it's been the source of many a good daydream.

Ditto on the PB pucker factor.  I've been out of there many times on charters and even on the biggest day, it never broke across the entrance.

His "chovy" swimbaits are the best IMO,  Good shape ( head end is flat) they transition into the jig head better, "looks" more natural (not that the fish mind).  When I run into them, and its been a while, I buy a bunch of the 4" & 6" swimbaits.  Also, his advice on the 8inch white curly tail grubs is dead on.  As is the torpedo sinker action, heavy but cheap and effective (I like to add red or white yarn (ling floss) to my split hooks).

The article is no longer up.  I managed to find the original post on ifish (http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=23492), but the pics are gone there.  Anyone have the article stashed away somewhere?

Definitely a hot topic I bet :) just got back from Depoe a beer ago. Was able to confirm that I'll be the one with nothing to weigh in...
