I've been over rocks and sand and through the woods with my cart. A couple backcountry lakes I am planning to visit have a bit of a hike to get to, just have to leave a little early for a hike in.

Just a thought i know saturday at the Alder Creek Paddle Festival there was a boys scout group helping out .. Maybe someone at Alder Creek might have a connection to using the camp.

I wouldnt mind tagging along.

I may have to bust out my secret Eagle Scout handshake and get permission to fish there.  Maybe I/we can offer to do a kayak fishing clinic with some of the older scouts in exchange for some beach time.  If I remember correctly the scouts need to be proficient in several forms of fishing and kayaking for those respective badges.

Anyone know which scouting district runs that camp?

I found my answer, Cascade Pacific Council with their main office here in downtown Portland.  The camp itself is in the Tillamook District.

Back in the 90's I was asked to teach a group of scouts how to surf.  I saw it as a great way to gain access to the camp but I was informed that while the scouts would be staying there, they didn't allow surfboards in the camp area and instruction would have to take place in Pacific City......

Well it was a thought.  What about during the "off season" if any?

There had apparently been a negative encounter in the past between "campers" and surfers which drove the No-Surfboards rule.  I don't think that rule extends to kayaks....  I'd say it's worth a shot.

I like this idea and would be willing to help with a clinic for sure if help was needed.

Wow, what a spot!  I would go over both mountain ranges for a chance at that gem.  The camp is Boy Scouts (is it a lease from USFS?) so perhaps they would entertain the request for consideration from the group.  I have been a member of a horse club over here- that has a lease on a parcel at the Metolious.  We voted on select inquiries and thus allowed most groups to use the facilities.  Man, that looks like a wonderful place to kayak fish.
Yeah, nice kayak cart too..

Well.. much like I thought, the Scouts were very friendly and understanding (very nice and helpful lady), but they don't allow access (even though the lady I talked to thought yak fishing was a great idea) because "if they open the doors to one user group then when and who do they close them to" also "it would be hard for them to police who should be there and who shouldn't and the potential damage/vandalism etc that might occur from those not supposed to be there"..  I explained at most we were looking for "a parking spot close to the beach, nothing more. but no dice.. I totally understand their decision and think their reasons are more than valid.

As to groups.. they do allow them, but the group must retain a $1,000,000 (yes 6 zeros ::)) liability rider for the event , regardless of the group size or event length.  She did give me the name and number of the on site ranger, perhaps he would be more understanding to a car or two parked in some out of the way spot while they fish, but I really doubt it :-[. Next time I am down there I might give him a call and see what 5lbs of smoked salmon would do for access ;D

Hmm, maybe you just need a fishing guide with proof of that level of insurance, to accompany your group. ::)

So who owns that stretch of beach from the OHV area to the wall?   I wonder if we could get permission from "whomever" to be able to drive and park down there?  Possibly with a Forest Service or OSP officer as an escort.  As for parking where is the high tide line compared to say PC launch area?

4wd is a must and possibly aired down tires to get back up to the main parking lot while leaving.  Air for the tires could easily be replaced at the Sand Lake store, or any portable air compressor.

PP, thanks for taking the time to walk it and figuring out how long it takes to get from each location.
