Wife and I were down at the coast this weekend.  Forecast for the ocean was not great for the yak and when I put an eyeball on it at PC is was true, probably do able but not fun.  We have a number of hikes we do in the area and one of our favorites is the hike from the top of Cape lookout down to the beach on the south side (boyscout camp).  Its 2.5 miles all downhill to a great beach and some potentially PRIME yak fishing water.  To far and steep to drag the yak, I've always thought about it on the way down, but the walk back up cures that idea..  I am going to try to get access from the scouts but I'm not holding my breath.  Added a few pics that drive me crazy :(... I've fished this a couple times out of a PB and there is plenty reason to wet a line.. Ocean can be to rough to launch most other places in the area and this is waiting just out of reach ???

Good luck with the scout access......  Surfers have been trying that for years.  Like I said on another thread though, if we could get a group together, we could rent the facilities for a night or weekend and gain access that way.

I'd be willing to pay!!!!

I think the Boy Scout camp is only open in the offseason (after Sept until about mid-june).  And they have strict boyscout-ish rules (like to cold ones after a hard day of fishing).

I think it's about 3 miles from the closest Sand Lake access, and still at least 2 from the Boyscout access.

The boyscout camp has direct beach access.

OK, so who's gonna call for availability and prices?

I timed it walking from the edge of the sand lake atv boundry (the big metal sign on the beach) 30-35 min or so walk on firm sand, I don't know how far from a " solid ground" parking spot, for those non OHV folks.  Its about a 10 minute walk from the nearest  boy scout yak friendly access point.

I plan on calling today..  See what the options are.  In these hard economic times they might be up for a kayak user access donation?  Maybe sponsor a scout for some access who knows, I will ask..

Inflatable kayak.  Maybe one of the more durable models from Aire.  Ya can't take all of your stuff, but it'd be an easy way to go.  They're not bad to pack into lakes, but they ain't light, either.  Just an option....

Edit:

450 bucks and 40 pounds and you're in........

If nothing else I plan to fish it by paddling around from the north side of the cape (state park) when the ocean conditions are friendly.  I was just hoping to find the North Coast equivalent of Sunset Bay (I get jealous of the ankle high waves when my local spots are to rough to fish ;D)

Its tempting to try the trail..   80% of the trail is in good enough shape for a cart and yak, the other 20% would be interesting :o (if a little steep in  places) but you would only do it once, as humping your yak up the hill 2.5 miles would be a killer. The guys with surf boards coming back up the hill after a morning of surfing look like they are beat and most of them are just packing their wetsuit and their board.

Ahhh ... portage down, launch, do a one way to the north where we stash a pick up vehicle?

I like that idea, just as long as the surf isn't too bad on the other side and there isn't too much of a current ripping around that point from the north.
Downhill hike, easy launch, only thing to worry about is dumping on the way in at the end of the day. Not bad at all.

If winds and currents ate a problem, just go south to the Sand Lake area.
