Insayn,

Backup venues are exactly that.  We can't make a call until we feel there is a high probability in the weather forecast being correct.

Please don't think the planners are scheming for some unfair advantage ... that's just not right.  We're not doing this so we can win a prize and we'd likely give up a prize anyways and pass it onto the next contestant.  Most planners don't have enough time to fish the event anyway, between coordination and weighing.  We're doing this out of our love of this sport and this community ... FOR YOU!!!

We can't control the weather.  It is what it is.  We could decide to cancel the derby and no one gets any prizes.  Instead ... we make due with what we got.

Thank you for your understanding.

-Allen

Heaviest fish period works for me.  I'm still disappointed, but I'm also not too keen on meeting my end this weekend either.

We are talking about Big Creek Reservoir #2 right?  Can we bring/drink beer at the campsite and reservoir?

I'm down for heaviest freshwater fish.  Haven't caught any yet from my yak - looks like I need to make a trip to the tackle store tomorrow to get me some real trout gear (beside powerbait).

I agree, sucks that we won't be out on the ocean, but I was out today, in swells that were around 6ft @ 9 or so seconds right at the end, and the ride got a little rollercoastery.  And I huli'd the landing.  So I am entirely happy staying inland when the sea decides to get bigger than 11 feet.

Pole Pole, I completely understand forecasts cannot be set, and Oregon has enough changes in the forecast on a daily basis that planning a specific day for one event that could be very easily closed, should absolutely have a backup venue from the beginning so that participants can plan/prepare for either.

I don't feel anyone is scheming to get an advantage, but even considering a change that wasn't planned for doesn't give the participants any lead on what it "may" be changed to, thus being able to prepare for it regarding tackle, lodging, etc...   Thus my vote towards, bagging the tournament completely and just doing a big potluck, and if we don't take refund of our entry fee for the canceled event that was originally planned months ago for the ocean, then the raffle sounds fair enough as well.

Like I said, I will disagree but will commit to whatever the vote comes to at this point.

If we go ahead and change the venue to fishing at Big Creek Reservoir, please post everything we need to know in one location to not cause confusion.

Things like:

Check in location,
Check in time,
Launch location,
Launch time,
Fishing requirements,
Weigh in location,
Weigh in times,
Potluck location,
Potluck time,
Raffle location,
Raffle time.

Thx :-\

FYI, I don't recall a derby in the last 5 years that had to go to a backup plan due to weather ... so it's not something we really plan for.

Yes.

We had a backup plan that was rock fishing and had a very good chance at working. What we ended up with were some pretty amazing circumstances that thwarted all possible saltwater venues. Posting all possible plans is not only tiring but overkill as an organizer.

The alternate venue is 6.6 miles from the Beverly Beach campground and 12 miles from Depoe Bay proper. Considering that it is plan C, I think that's pretty darn good.

Either way there's a swag bag for every entrant, and for winning: a kayak, a paddle, a PFD, a kayak fishing rod, a livewell, sunglasses, RAM mounts, magazines subscriptions, gift certificates, T-shirts, custom gaffs, hats, and a lure gift pack.

If anyone wants some of my blood, see me at camp HQ.

Although I am bummed the Ocean won't let us play I am happy with the alternate.  Granted I'm not much of a trout or bass fisherman but the new event location looks PB free, close to Depoe and safe (I was nervous for newbies and rough ocean conditions, no fish is worth being unsafe).  Hats off to the planners for giving us somewhere decent to fish on short notice. Now off to Fisherman's to put some  new line on my bass reels ::)

*sighs*, such a bummer, every single time I clear my schedule for some ocean fishing this summer this has happened...

Thus my vote towards, bagging the tournament completely and just doing a big potluck

I'm going to fish regardless, hopefully the plan C happens, if not I'll hit up the potluck after I get some fishing in.  I can bring extra freshwater gear and poles for people, but to just bag out of something we've been looking forward to all summer sounds pretty lame.  Life happens, but lets suck it up and have a potluck after the trout tournament.

Looks like i might have a shot at something though, heh take me off the newb status if it's for trout,  :headbang:  If only it was for most fish caught though, then i'd give you all a run for your money, still working on seeking those lunkers.

Checking out all of the ODFW info on the reservoir, and the only thing that I can't figure out is the overall depth of the lake.  Anyone have and idea?  Are we talking 30-50 feet at max, or over 100?

As I recall, #2 doesn't get too deep.  My guess would be 30 to 50.
