Here are two other options for you
the Dagger Torrent

and the Liquid Logic Coupe, which looks like it can fit a milk crate.

Are pontoons legal for AOTY?
I don't think we've made a judgement on it yet. Will have to ponder for 2011.

Pole mentioned 'toons as the way to go in a thread way back about "the right kayak for rivers" and I think he's right until they make a better designed river kayak w/ oars. But I dunno if that's even a kayak anymore. :-\

The beauty I see about river craft w/ oars is they can "hover" (by back paddling) over a spot and let you scope rough sections, or go back up river if needed. Check :48 on this vid.

The kayak definitely works but ends up w/ a lot of stopping and scouting most rough spots and then going balls to the wall through them. While fun, I've put myself in some bad situations because of it too. My fault for not scoping the spot better but the 'toon is definitely more forgiving.

They're more stable and you sit higher up, enabling you to see water depths a bit easier and spot good holding spots.  In my yak I just drift right down the river and only stop to re-tie.  I get the boat where I want it, then cast, then keep the boat where I want it and drift along with my bobber.  Works great so far!   ;D ;D ;D

If they are legal for AOTY, there won't be much stopping me from getting one.

WR - those cata-rafts are serious white-water boats.  I'd love to get a big one that I could take the kids on.  Saw several on the White Salmon last year and they looked super fun.

Pontoon, row boat, kayak, or a log.... what's the difference?  :-\

What style of kayak is that Pisco Sicko is rowing in the AOTY?

In the past we allowed all style of human powered watercraft ... mainly  because we were small and this was a way to increase participation.

Bill has sort of flown under the radar since we are nice guys.  He hasn't really won anything so it hasn't been an issue.  No one has an issue with this, do they?  Take it offline in a PM to me if you do.

Anyways, moving forward I think we should make this a non-motorized kayak only competition.  It just seems right.  Sorry Bill.   :-*

I'm cool with any human powered boat, toon, yak, etc..... being legal in the AOTY.
Makes no matter to me.
I was just taken by surprise when Zee made it sound like yaks were the only thing legal.

It's your guy's game, your rules.
Bend them, change them, or stretch them into funny shapes.

All I said was that there wasn't a judgement which means.. there wasn't a judgement. Not this way and not that way. Capiche?
PS was allowed because he's an all around good guy and OG.

A pontoon is not even close to a kayak... Seems weird that a friendly competition on Northwest KAYAK angler would include anything besides Kayaks....  What's next drift boats?  Heck I have oarlocks and sweeps for my sled ;D

I say, for what its worth, human powered kayaks only.   Paddle or pedal's or your own hot air makes no never mind to me.

My buddy and I purchased similar pontoons a year ago at Costco. The Steelheader pontoon seems a little more beefy with larger pontoons than what I have but I have successfully drifted the upper Skagit, Cowlitz and the upper Green in mine with no problem.  All metal frame, cooler/storage rack behind the flip down seat and even a motor mount for an electric motor (should you want one), rod holder and plenty of pockets for storage.  Also comes with a rope to hook up a drift anchor and a hand pump.  Pontoons inflate/deflate for storage.  I bought a car plug in air pump that makes assembly that much easier.  I don't recall the name of the company that makes them but they are based in Seattle.  Costco was selling them for around $240 ea.  I looked at similar boats that were in the $700-900 price range at different retailers including Cabelas.
