Cabbies are one of my favorites. DB seems to be a good place to catch them.

I spent the first half hour trying to find a bit.  After that, it was game on, and I was getting bit constantly until i switched up to the fly rod.  the bite wasn't high, but I thought my sinking line would get to them... oh well...

I started off getting hit by lings.  Something in my head told me 28" minimum, so i threw back a few keepers on the day.  I had an easy half dozen lings and underlings by the time everyone caught up with me.  I also picked up a single almost 20" cab that was released as they arrived.

As I continued drifting, the bite slowed a bit until we got up to the north reef. Once everyone turned their back, I was back in the game.  I drifted over a huge school of rockies.  I spent the rest of the day just pounding on these guys.  Doubles and triples were constantly going off.  Hits on the drop, the works.  I picked up a few cabezon and underlings here and there, but mostly rocks.  The action, for me, only stopped when I stopped fishing to get the fly rod together.  By the time I had it strung, and my fly tied on, I had drifted well past where I had spent the day, and had a hard time finding the school, despite the waypoint i had marked.

I headed back to The Rock where everyone else had returned.  I still dunno where exactly KJ, Fun and LB actually went, but I know their fishing was good.  Dropped a few jigs around the rock and called it a day.

I totally mis-judged the landing, and over-braced a wave.  it broke right underneath me, broadside, and i rolled it over.  Broke my fly rod (inside the kayak), and lost my jigs, measure board, tape measure, but came away relatively unscathed.  If the battery on my camera wasn't dead, i would have had the whole thing on video... It was also a good test for the "Dry Top/Dry Pants" combo (give 'em a B-) .

I'll have pics and stuff later, I still need to find a measuring device somewhere around the house......

Great day on the water!!!

Guys it was great getting to meet all of you and that was one hell of a way to kick off ocean fishing for 2011.

As soon as I pulled out onto the beach I knew it was going to be a great day. Perfect blue bird day, small little rollers coming in and a nice little pocket of mild water to launch through. We geared up and hit the water heading straight out were The Nothing and a dory were hanging out straight off the cape.

The dory was killing the blacks and pulling them up constantly. Things were looking even better. We all said our hellos and eagerly started gearing up. Hook ups came as soon as gear touched bottom! Underlings all the way around. As the we fished on the current sent us all in our own direction and each seemed to find some solid fish. For me the early fish were a couple of nice cabies mixed in with a few underlings.

As we got pushed further north we all pulled up and headed back to the cape. Now it was time for keeper ling. I banded off a couple and saw a few others being caught. The Ling bite was HOT!

With two keepers on the stringer and two cabs I couldn't complain! With limits of ling filling up we headed over to the rock to see if we could find some blacks to round out the day. Some could keep them off the line ... Others just kept catching ling. We probably averaged 10 ling a piece and I know we released at least 6 or 8 keepers.

With full stringers and tired early season arms we decided to head back to the beach. Almost all of us had the softest of possible beach landings that just slid us up on the sand. A few pictures later and a bit of truck loading and we headed back to the house for a beer or two in the sunshine!

Freaking great day!!

TTM - I have a couple cabs in the fridge that need to be cut tonight. I will try and get some pics for you.

Isn't it great when Lake Pacific rolls into town? The wind and water lay down and the fish are on the chew !?! Especially since it was so iffy the day before. It does not get much better than that. Looks like you guys handled up and rocked the howse.  :icon_thumleft:

REALLY wish I didn't know what you are talking about. ::)

Sorry it ended in a yard sale coming in, that's never fun. But I'd like to hear little more about how your waders/drytop faired.

Sounds like you guys has a great day.  I am kicking myself for picking up a shift at work instead of heading to the coast.

not as well as I had hoped.  I ended up with probably a quart of water in my pants.  Most was absorbed by the fleece and wool socks.  Never felt cold until later on when sitting in damp clothes in the shade.  I never bothered re-entering the kayak, especially when in the surf zone.  PC is shallow enough that I walked/body surfed back to the beach.  I spent several minutes in the water.

Here are a few pics I pulled off the PlaySport this AM

Couldn't have asked for a more awesome maiden voyage for my new T13 (Thanks again Alkasazi).

The bite was steady, skies were blue, water was flat, company was good, beer was cold.

The only thing I could gripe about was I couldn't buy any decent rockfish. Ling after ling, even had a double. I landed 4 keeper size, including the nice blue I CPRd and had at least a dozen undersize.

Looks like you guys had an awesome day.  I was kicking myself for leaving the Adventure and gear at home.  Best I could muster was to crawl into my old wetsuit and take a fish n dive out to play in the surf.  Felt good to get out on the salt, it would have felt a lot better to put the hurt on some fish. Congrats!

Nothing... Any video of your launch into that wave?   Let me guess it was that 3rd ish break off the beach (paddled through a couple sloppy ones and then bam that ones right up in your wheelhouse.  If it is,  thats the same one that caught me and had my yak give me a concussion ;D, you'll only make that mistake once.
