We (WR & I) tried the bicycle hoisting for both the OK 13 and 15.. the ropes kept binding and catch or jumping track.. we couldnt really spread them out far enough for what and where we liked them to be.

SO i took my knowledge of rigging i learned in the Navy and built my own pulley system. its based of the bicycle hoisting rack but it used 3 ceperate pulleys and doesnt have a weight limit of 50Lbs.

Whats nice is i pull in  grab the storing staps put them on the kayak .. unfasten the kayak from the car. lift and its stored.

I was going use the hoist system bluewrxo2 has. I have found the kit at Lowes and Fredmyer as well. After reading some reviews on it, some complain the straps are too long, rope is cheap, and locking/latch system requires weird angle to unlock. I am going with something like this guy's. I need it to be able to suck up close (unlike his) to the ceiling to clear the top above the garage door. Shouldn't be hard to find quality parts.

If you do go with a pulley setup like the one you posted in the Youtube video, don't store your yak upright like he is showing.  Could warm the hull over time.  Flip it over like Squidgirl and WR demenstrated.

All great stuff, thanks everyone! My goal is to get my tools, work bench, kayaks, and at least one car in the garage or space for one car. We'll see where I land.

One car in the garage will just make the other car jealous, and then you'll start having nickle and dime issues with the car outside.
The car in the garage will start to get a superiority complex and eventually treat you like a pawn.
Might as well nip this in the butt and keep them both outside and show them both who is boss.
If your wife teams up with the cars, you might be screwed!
However, you have one other option..... convince the kayaks, tools and work bench to gang up on your wife and the cars and make the garage sound like a
hell hole prison and that it's no place for cars or women to ever venture into.    ;D

Sorry, I'm tired......

And the pics with and without the car. I have 6" by 1/4" Lag bolts with a big ring screwed into a stud in the ceiling, and these http://www.roperatchet.com/roperatchets.shtml to hoist the top boat up and down.

The garage is mine. I had two requirements for our new house, one it have a yard for the dog, and two it have enough garage/shop space for my tools, kayaks, and misc projects. Anything else was completely up to her. The cars are actually not allowed in the garage unless they’re broken or in need of service. In which case we get to spend some “special” time together, but I have to have the room to pull them into. The garage is known as the area I disappear into for long periods of time and generally emerge bleeding from. Let the man cave building begin!

Here's another solution if you have a heavier kayak/boat like the Pro Angler.  I have a garage door that takes up most of the ceiling.  I needed a cradle/wall mount. Suspendz makes some great options.  Two Pro Anglers used to take up my entire garage. Now only half my garage  http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,5839.msg60405.html#msg60405

Be sure to check out the storage systems that Talic makes.  Talic.com
I use the "Tilt" cradles.  I have to park my truck in the garage so the kayaks had to be either suspended or hung on the wall.  Since I like to be able to tinker with them whenever I want, I love them being on the wall.  These cradles have also been used in two different apartments I lived in while in Salem where I had to put the kayak stuff in the living room.  It was my favorite wall art!  ;D

I'm sure Amanda loved that.

Notice the difference in cleanliness and organization between when everything was in the living room and when it is all in the garage!  :laughing7:

My carport ceiling is too low to hang the kayaks so I took the easy way out and purchased the Suspenz.  I had only one yak at the time so I just purchase the wall mount.  Now that I have two yaks, I decided to purchase the stand which allows me to move things around if needed.
