How far north does those MFE's range extend? That poke polling looks fun. A quick online search says Coos Bay, maybe Yaquina. Seems like a jetty would be a good place to hunt. Maybe BSteves knows?

Nice pictures!

The Sebastes genus, is quite beautiful, particularly the China, Copper, Yelloweye and Canary rockfishes.

Just wondering if anyone has been poked by a rockfish spine? Rockfishes are related to scorpionfishes and supposably they have mild venom in their spines....

I would advise against it.
I have been poked by many. Even had a spine break off in my finger and hang out there for a couple weeks before it worked it's way out.
Different species give people different reactions. I have seen guys have their fingers balloon up huge and have to have surgery. From what I hear Idiots are the worse, fortunately they are very deep and only encountered commercially.

Southern Oregon seems about right.  However, the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History has one in their collection from Boiler Bay just north of Depoe Bay collected in 1942.

Yep, they hurt like hell (actually more like a bee sting).   I actually poked myself in the thigh, through my wetsuit, once when I accidentally dropped a black rockfish upside down on to my lap.  I'm much more careful now.   From what I understand some of the deeper living species are a bit more potent and also just like bee stings, people react differently to the venom.

Actually, "idiots" or "thornyheads" are in a different genus ... Sebastolobus and I believe that genus is more venomous in general than Sebastes.

The picture of the black was a bit deceiving.  Just from the looks, I called black, but because you had the gill flap flared, it made the maxilla appear to extend only halfway back on the eye, which is a sign of a blue.

The body shape of a black reminds me of a largemouth.  The body shape of a blue reminds me of a smallmouth.

That yelloweye should have been obvious.  It does have a yellow eye ... DUH!  And the black edges to the fins.

Agree with Funnigan, can't cheat.  I do not have a pic to post so I will not submit my guess.  This one was tricky until you look at the fin structure.  Flipped a coin to see which one I put first.  Hopefully one is correct, widow or dusky.  bsteves, how was my guess?
