Ok guys ... Here are a few species of rock fish from this year. Some are easier than others. If you have any other species feel free to add them.
Fish 1 - China
Identify from yellow stipe down lateral line the extends though the spines. Rounded tail.

Fish 2 - Black Rockfish
Molted black/grey bigger head than Blue. Back of the mouth extends past the middle of the eye

Fish 3 - Copper Rockfish
Usually brownish to light pink, Not red. Rounded tail. Canary tail has a V

Fish 4 - Blue Rockfish
Rounded shape, footballish. Smaller head than Black. Back of the mouth does not extend past the middle of the eye.

Fish 5 - Yelloweye Rockfish
Bright Orange in color. Juvenile will have a white stripe along the lateral line . Yellow iris to the eye. Rounded tail, usually with dark tips.

I'm going to pass on this and let others try.   I foresee the last one fooling a few people.

For those wanting to know more...
ODFW has a decent dichotomous key for rockfish.

Even if you don't understand the key, the underlined species common names link to good diagrams for each species.

I'm PMing my IDs. Would have been a good post for a poll, with the correct answers revealed after "voting".

Is a graduate degree in Fisheries Oceanography cheating?  In case it's not, I PM'd my answers.   I'll settle for a some tips on improving my own fish cleaning.

Oops.  I wasn't positive on the last one so I used Bsteve's link to confirm. He scared me when he said the last one would fool a few.  I guess I cheated.  :police: Sorry.  Looks like I am cleaning my own fish.  I will just watch you for pointers.

However, I may laminate those pictures from the link to have out on the water with me.

Only 11 entries so far? ....
This is good practice and the result of me "engaging in spirited conversation" with a redneck at the cleaning station last weekend.
I was right BTW =)

Here is how everyone did.

Correct answers were
1. China
2. Black
3. Copper
4. Blue
5. Yelloweye

#2,4 and 5 gave people the most trouble.
#5 had the following guesses - Yelloweye(correct) Yellowmouth, Canary, and vermilion

Check out the OP as I put up a few key identifiers to help OTW

Thanks for playing. This was spawned from a conversation at the fillet dock about the Copper. Some guy was convinced it was a Canary, though no one on this board did  ;D

It is good practice to keep up on these. Especially in Washington were the freakin rules change every ten feet of coastline.

I told you the last one will mess people up and I'm sure the folks that got #2 and #4 wrong got them switched.

I'm going to keep this thread going a bit.  I'll post a rockfish, who ever gets the identification right will then post the next fish to be identified.   Repeat.

Oh, and try to restrict the fish to ones that can be found locally.
