Abalone cards will be about $20 additional limit 3 per day and possession 24 per year 7" min and very strict enforcement.  There are some great ab tides in the days before the tourney.

Thanks for pointing that out, Doug.   :)

Good info here, Guys!  The abalone opportunity at Shelter Cove is very very good.  With the minus tides that are occuring before and right up through tournament weekend, there will be legal abs to be had with minimal gear - I've pulled legal abs there on minus tides while wearing shorts and a t-shirt - not always easy, but there's a great population of abalone there.  Diving, if we're blessed with some flat and clear water, produces easy limits of eight to 9 inchers in 10-20' of water.  I learned to ab dive at Shelter Cove, have dove most of the accessible spots along the coast there and within a few miles north and south, and will set anyone in our group up with the best information possible when we're there.  Looking forward to meeting you guys.   :)
See you at Gimme Shelter

I'm hoping to dive for ab's on Friday (camp food) and Sunday morning to take some home.  I've never dove the shelter cove area I usually go down to the van dam area to meet up with family and friends.  I hope we have some good weather so we can get  some ab's on the griddle.

Found this article on an diving. From a yak: http://tsunamirangers.com/2010/10/13/abalone-diving-from-your-kayak/

Is it better to use a wet suit or would a dry suit work? How deep do you need to dive at Shelter Cove?

I got some training to do to get in shape to do this.

I'm hoping my son will drive up from Auburn, CA. He lived in Eureka for several years and caught lots of steelhead, salmon, rockfish, etc. I'll probably try to spend 4-5 days there since its such a long drive.

You end up wrestling with sharp rocks, so wear a wetsuit vs risking damage to a drysuit.  The minus tides will allow for rockpicking, so one can likely get abs w/o diving. If you do dive abs can be had in less than 10'.

I guarantee the ab opportunity regardless of conditions!

I've got a Hobie Tandem Island on a trailer, will I have any problem accessing the launch ramp for fishing or abalone?

Sorry for the delayed answer, Hoppa - the ramp is very friendly - you should have no problem.

Yaksurf is in!  More than 5% of our registered competitors are NWKA now!   ;D

Eric, not sure if it was posted somewhere but I see notes on the NCKA site about raffle prizes.  What is the buy in on raffle tickets?
