Sweet!

At this point, it's going to take an act of God to cancel this trip.

Now, I need to become one with the California fishing regs, as well as figure out something to provide for the potluck.

Good goals to have, Craig.   :)  Let me know if I can help.  Here's some general info:

- lingcod minimum size = 22", limit 2
- cabezon minimum size = 15", limit 3
- greenling minimum size = 12", limit 2 (may be changing...)
- most other rockfish = no minimum sizes, no take of canary or yellow eye
- salmon = chinook only, 24" minimum, barbless slip rigs OK for trolling, barbless fixed circles for mooching, limit 2
- pacific halibut = no minimum size, limit 1
- fun = unlimited   :)
See you at Gimme Shelter

Did I see a rockfish limit of 10?

Did I see a rockfish limit of 10?

Ah, yes, my bad.  I should've mentioned that since I know Oregon is 6 (right?...), and I admit I don't know what Washington's daily RF limit is.  Anyway, thet 10 fish limit for rockfish includes RCG - Rockfish, Cabezon, Greenling.  Lingcod are outside that limit.

Last year we had perch and flounder in the competition to go along with AOTY open species, but I found that our presence around the launch in kayaks fishing for perch was a potential problem, and sand dabs didn't come into play much if at all, so I dropped those two species.  Salmon have been hard to come by during the tournament weekends - one was caught two years ago in prefish (15 pound king), and I lost one at the net in prefish last year (around 10 pounds  :'()  But this is for real:  the salmon do come in close at Shelter Cove - I caught a 38 pounder less than a mile from lanuch in Sept. '06 and the nearshore fishery for nice kings to 20 pounds norm is strong there - bring the trolling gear!  Within a week of the original Gimme Shelter in '07 I went back down and limited twice, so the bite was off by just a few days.  The pacific halibut are also closer to shore there than you would normally see - 3 of us kayakers caught 30 to 50 pounders about 1.5 to 2 miles out last year, and 2 of those were during tournament weekend.  Most will shoot for recording the 4 rockfish-type species:  rockfish/lingcod/greenling/cabezon, and the average species total will likely be around 2.5 to 3, as it'll be hard for many to get a cab and a greenie, and many will fail to get either.  I noticed while writing that that it may come off as quite confident for lingcod - it's well founded.  The lingcod population at Shelter Cove is remarkable, and California just moved to 22" min. from 24" last year, so there are tons of "legal" lings out there.  Anyway, if I have 100-120 competitors and the weather's nice I may have trouble checking all of them in.  I'm devising plans to direct people to self-score and only check in to the official table if they reach a certain threshhold of points/species.  I will have to determine, based on weather, the bite, radio talk, lack of radio talk, and just eyes on the water, just what that threshhold is.  So it's a good thing I'm fishing in the tournament!   ;D  I am ineligible for prizes, but bragging rights are open F@&$ing game!   8)

This is the type of rambling I would do on past NCKA Gimme Shelter threads, but I just refer them to the old threads now.   :)  Can't wait - hope you guys can make it in numbers.   :)
See you at Gimme Shelter

Anyone know what the out of state fishing license is gonna cost? Thinking of prefishing Thursday and Friday too. Trying to plan out the budget since we still have the ORC a month after this tourney.

I found some info here:  http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/fishdescrip.html

Looks like you'll be out about $45 to get covered for the whole weekend.

That's not bad, I thought it would be alot higher than that.
Thanks Eric.

I'll have to check out the link and see if crabbing is open and how much more for the license. But I figure if it's a 5 or 6 crab limit and my crew chips in for one license for one day, it would make a great dinner on either of the prefishing days.

Right on guys!  More NWKA reps to infiltrate the Cali's.   >:D

I'm bringing plenty of kayak rack space to bring back that new RTM Abaco!    ;)

Hey guys crab is included in license limit 10 legal size 5 3/4" either sex although we traditionally only take jumbo males.

Abalone cards will be about $20 additional limit 3 per day and possession 24 per year 7" min and very strict enforcement.  There are some great ab tides in the days before the tourney.
