Insayn, you never cease to amaze me!  That was awesome.

I agree!!  Top notch bodging as usual!

I'm going to steal that idea too.  Maybe mod it a little so the fins face towards ,and out over, the front deck of the yak, which I find works better for me.

I gotcha covered Lee, consider it a wedding present.   :-*
I'll even drill the hole in it for a leash that you can add later to fit your needs.

But, I have to wait till it quits raining.  I hate to get my hair wet when fiddling in the driveway.    ;D

If you're beach landing (on sand not rocks) is locking the drive against the hull with the built in Hobie plastic hook on shock cord not safe? I pulled onto shore on the Sandy River several times using this technique (no surf, just current to contend with). Seemed reasonable even on rocky pull ins.

I've beached mine on sand, and light loose gravel many times your way.  I just jump out before I actually hit bottom, and lift the bow up and walk it up the beach to set it down on the fins.  I wouldn't suggest jamming them directly into the sand/gravel, or dragging them through the sand/gravel though.

Rain isn't an issue either, but I have a coupon here for a free jab at Lee.  Figured I'd cash it in.   >:D

My apologies.  I'm a little slow.  I re-read it and now I am laughing.

Actually I need two, I don't mind paying for them  :D

Can you stencil a unicorn with a rain coat on them?

Just looked and I have just enough material left to make two more, so that won't be an issue.
I'm not a big fan of Unicorns, so you'll have to get Funngunin to do the art work for ya.   :color:

As for paying for them, you have two choices.  (Choose wisely)

1.) Because of the color differences between your two kayaks, and your lady clearly has a better color.....her's is going to be $2.50 for material and labor.
Your's would be $19.75 for material all the extra polishing required to bring your's up to code, but as a freind I'll do it for $18.75.  That's a killer deal right there!

Or!

2.) You could graciously receive them both as a wedding gift from me.  :occasion1:

I am pretty sure that is how I bent the masts on a Turbo drive. I was careful not to drag the fins through the sand, but I think that because the stern was still in the water and rocked by wakes, the yak rolled out on the tips and bent the masts. Turbo fins stick out beyond the chine and can get rolled up on. I haven't bent a mast sinceI quit beaching on them. I pull the drive before beaching now.

i remember the conversation around the table in the Pelican during ORC '08, and Zee telling me if i ever went Hobie, to ALWAYS pull the drive before landing and make sure it was lashed down.

Here's another option.  Only a couple of months from turning 70, so I don't plan on any surf experiences.  However -
I do like to paddle and have an open cockpit for fishing and crabbing so I wanted to store the mirage drive and get it out of the cockpit.  I installed pad eyes on the bow with 1.5" plastic ball casters with bungee to hold the fins.  The casters make it easier to get the fins under the bungee.
Next I installed a flush mount Scotty rod holder modified to fit the contour of the hatch and reamed to 1" diameter to accommodate the hub from the drive.  The non-skid is just to protect the hatch from getting scratched when moving and storing the drive.
An added option might be to add a hook and bungee attached to the peddles to hold the drive more securely.  May do this later this spring.
To each his own....

Awesome ideas!  I like the security of INSAYN's method and I like how Quillback's is out of the cockpit.

INSAYN, where does one purchase 1/2 solid aluminum rod in the PDX area?  Alaskan Copper & Brass or is there a good place you know of that for getting used/scrap material?

I have a couple of metal supply shops out here in Forest Grove that keep me stocked with all my metal needs.
There is also The Steel Yard on Columbia BLVD.   You might even be able to get small (but expensive) stock at Homer Depot or Blowes.
