I've been meaning to rig up something similar to what QuillbackBob did - I think that having some bungee on the bow designated for drive storage is the way to go.  I've done enough surf launches/landings to feel like I want the drive out of the cockpit area and strapped down.  It is pretty cumbersome to have it under your legs when you need to jump out quickly and grab the yak to avoid getting dumped by a wave.

Do any of you use a leash for your mirage when not using this method? I currently am using a Hobie rod leash that I have attached through the back of my mirage drive and connected to  the hatch bungee. Just in case I need to remove my drive while on the water and  accidentally fumble it over.

I got the Hobie drive leash and always use it.

Is the drive leash much different than the rod leash? The Hobie rod leash seemed to fit the mirage well and seems pretty sturdy.

Yup.  I use the same leash that I use to lash it down with.  It's about a 20" by 1/4" bungee with a brass clip.
The pad eye I added near the mast hole is where I attach to in all scenarios.  It is currently a plastic eye with a small metal backer plate, but will soon be changed to a stainless eye and a bit larger metal backer plate.

That looks alot like the stock Hobie leash. Only thing that concerned me about the Hobie leash was that it had a plastic buckle. But it seems pretty sturdy even pulling on it hard.

Don't know what the stock Hobie leash looks like.  Mine didn't have one, so I made my own.  I think I'd trust brass over plastic any day for this jobber.  8)
