410 stainless snake charmers are popular.  But there 99.9% safety record means a certain death statistically speaking in less than 20 years. Uhhh...no thanks. Lol. I'd blow my leg off.

BUT I'm thinking it's safer than a handgun if I ever try and solo a salmon shark. It'd be a really long day without some kind of firepower I hear. Lol.  Bang stick should but my spidey senses tell me it's not going to be safer on a kayak.

If you can blow your leg off with a blank round I hope you fillet your fish with a butter knife or we will need to change your name to kardinal_0fingers.

Haha. I was talking with the shotgun.  My concern with a bang stick is two fold, especially with a shark (off topic. Sry). You have to contact the fish.  Two, being a clutz, having to babysit carefully something on the end of a long stick sounds like an accident waiting to happen. But I've never used one.  Let me dig up proof of my lack of coordination though embarrassing.

I don't halibut fish and know guns on a boat are a hole waiting to happen but anyone consider a 12 gauge blank on a bang stick, wouldn't the concussion kill it if hit in the head , I forsee an Insayn invention coming....

Never going to come from me.  I'm really not into guns.

Here's a shock cord setup which should keep the slip tip from falling off the tip of the harpoon.  It isn't drawn to scale.  The shock cord should probably be a thin one, strong enough to hold the slip tip on the tip of the harpoon if you point the harpoon downwards, but not so strong as to make it harder to pull the tip of the harpoon out of the slip tip after you poke a fish.  I'll post a photograph of the setup after I make it.

If you don't like broccoli, you can make rubber bands to hold your harpoon rope against the harpoon shaft by cutting rings of any width you want off an old inner tube from a road bike.  You can get old inner tubes from any bike shop, which throws away damaged tubes.
For a tip holder you ar r going to want something that you don't have to release. Remember you will have a rod in one hand trying to control a large fish. You want to be able to just grab your landing device and have it ready. You don't want to be fumbling to undo or release anything. I wouldn't put a cover on my harpoon point when in the boat for the same reason. If you are worried about it for launch and landing you can easily just take the point off.
You want your point retention system to be able to just slide off after you have struck a fish. Thats why a simple rubber band works well or a stretchy string or masking tape .....

Simple is best,  which is why I'm leaning back towards the shark hook

I just use a thin strip of duct tape on the wire lead, the wire cuts straight through and it sticks all day. I have a few pieces stuck on the yak in case I need a reload.

Yes, after I posted this shock cord idea I realized that when you poke a fish it's going to hit the gas and head out, breaking the shock cord.  I still like the shock cord idea, but need to devise a shock cord which will pop loose automatically when an irritated fish dives.

been reading this thread and can't help but think of a large, customized 'snap hook".

Kinda like a carabineer with a sharp point to it.
A short handle that can travel with the fish once tethered.
Now is one of those times I wish I were good with metals and not wood.

What would be nice is a spring loaded tip, like those found on a speargun, as the tip of the shark hook.
