I am trying to find some info for my Fatyakker blog and thought somebody here might be able to help out.

I am looking for calories burned (avg) for peddling a Hobie.  I would compare to a recumbent bicycle or something like that, but would like to see if anybody has any better info I can use.

Depends man.  If you're pushing really hard, then maybe 600/hour.  BUT that's if you're pushing really hard, and the entire time.  When you're fishing, you don't spend the whole time peddling though.

It seems like there are a lot of variables to calculate for an accurate count i.e. how wide/long your hull is, how much current/wind you were fighting, how fast you were pedaling etc.

Found this calculator, it seems like its meant for paddle kayaks but still something to look at. At 200 pounds, it claims kayaking burns 454 calories per hour.

I think it's possible to burn 500+ calories per hour in a Hobie if you are in good shape and really "crank it".
This belief is based on my exercycle I ride every day...it has a very good computer to measure the effort/ride......my time = 48 minutes, distance = 16.2 miles, avg. speed = 20.1 mph, crank rpm range is 78 to 82, normal calories burned = 545, avg watts = 162, avg heart rate = 105 bpm, max heart rate = 120 bpm....I lose about 1.3 pounds in sweat during the ride.......mind you I am 70, 192 pounds, 6' , on a mild BP medication and quaff a couple of Full Sale Amber ales every day.
When I fish in my Hobie Outback, my cadence is much  slower as I troll in the 1.6 to 2.2 mph range....usually  cover under 6 miles in 3 hours of trolling....not the same workout as my exercycle. :banjo:

For all out flat water race-pace, I'd go with 450-500/hr for 180 lbs of paddler.  That assumes good form with large core muscles doing the work.  Like anything, it's intensity-based.  Recreational or sub-10 mph bicycling burns exponentially fewer calories than 14+ mph sustained effort.  If you really want a definitive answer, you'll need a heart rate monitor and a good read through this book:

That's likely overkill, though.  If you're pedaling/paddling to lose weight, set the cal/hr at 300, keep your food in line to match that, and rejoice in your new svelte-ness.

This is a great sight if you want to really keep track of calories and exercise. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/  It has a huge food database.  It also has an exercise database for calories burned.  Unfortunately, nothing for peddling a kayak.
