My advice is to go with someone with experience and certainly not alone. Normally I'd be up for trying to make it but I will be out of town. Do you have all the gear you need for the salt?

I do have all the gear I think.... Have some buddies that kayak, but they aren't ready for salt yet.... That's why I posted on here see if anyone's headed out....
I've played in quite a bit of surf with my yak.... Very familiar with getting back on in water now lol

What pound line and pole combos work for salt? Anyone using a hand line setup?

I second that. And don't forget the VHF radio, rod leashes, and dory signaling device.

As for line I use a heavy set up for ling and cadezon (My Sturgeon set-up) I think it's 50 lb braid with a 20 lb 3 foot mono leader. And for smaller rock fish and greenling I use 12 lb mono on a saltwater spinning reel with a medium action shimano ugly stik tiger rod.

Use 30 lb braid on a medium heavy rod, think a salmon or sturgeon set up. If you use heavier line it can difficult to break off especially if you're stuck on kelp. In addition to what tex said you should also bring out a helmet for launch and landing. Not to beat a dead horse but make sure you go out with someone with experience. I'm back in town on the 9th if you want to meet up sometime after that. Do you have immersion gear? Dry suit, wetsuit, etc?

I do use helmet for surf! Have wet suit... I play in surf typically once a month...

I am lacking a experienced buddy at the moment, VHF radio etc though.... Are the vhfs required by law or just smart to have?

Well I have to work the 9th to the 13th but maybe the weekend following. VHF is a very good idea but not required by law.

I am using 50# braid with 20# mono leaders, and have had no problem breaking off - in fact, I am going to step up to 30# mono, since I broke off a couple of times on fish. No more dropper loops in the line!

You have a hobie. In a paddle kayak it can be we really challenging to break off 50 lb, especially when hooked up on kelp. Which there is plenty of at PC.

I don't have a ton of experience, but every time I've busted off my line, its been the mono leader that busted - I haven't been busting the braid. But I will agree, tucking your pole under your arm and pedaling away makes it easy to bust the line.

I have never used my drive to bust my line.  I have always just put myself as straight above the snag as I could, hung my feet over the sides, reeled in, and pulled.  Generally, 65# main, 30lb leader.  It can be difficult if the snag is at the swivel and I have to break the mainline.  I also make sure not to use the rod at all.  It should be straight in line with the snag, if it isn't, you're making it more difficult than it really is.

Yeah, i usually start with a leader but by the end of the day I just run straight braid. Either method will work.

Add a strong drift and big swells and this can be a recipe for an unintended swim.
