So, I am trying to make sense of the hood canal rules.  Flounder is a food fish, yes?  If so, then it would seem you would be able to take 2... flounder is not specifically listed.  Thoughts?  Lawyers? ugh!

Micah - so the regs for 12 say 2 of each species for food fish and is does not specially say flounder. So what do we do?

Flounder are not considered foodfish, they are considered bottomfish as per the WDFW definitions, see my post above.

I saw it and have read it in the regs... It would seem the classification goes as follows... There are food fish and game fish... Then below that in food fish, there is bottom fish, forage fish and some various specific fish... Flounder is a bottom fish that is a food fish... so, since flounder is not specifically mentioned, could the be retained as food fish... OR is bottom fish a blanket label... And if it is, why would WDFW go to the trouble to specifically list certain bottom fish as closed and not others?

As an avid hunter/fisherman like many of you out there I can't understand why the state of Washington keeps deliberately screwing us!!!!.... WE'RE THE ONE'S WHO PAY FOR EVERYTHING !!!....the founding's we provide with all of our tags and licensing fees and all the other fee's those assholes have tacked on this year (I.E discovery pass , ETC...)  ( my total is usually 300$-500$ a year)  that's what pays for fish and wildlife conservation studies and efforts to properly manage our game and yet they continue to screw us to the point that we don't even want to participate anymore....last year I went hunting / fishing in Wyoming and Montana and boy let me tell you what an eye opener that was to be in a state that KNOWS we pay for their jobs and actually cater to the sportsman

Flounder is listed as a bottom fish, not as an "other food fish".  Limit on the for MA-2 is 12 unless you're also retaining other bottomfish in which case the aggregate limit is 12.  "Other food fish" are a seperate limit of 2 per species per day.  There's a difference between "food fish" and "other food fish."

I've resorted to phoning WDFW before I plan my trip, they can't even confirm the regs sometimes!

sump - Ill be... there is actually a definition for other food fish... I have to be honest, I read your comment about a distinction and thought it couldn't possibly be correct that there must be food fish and other food fish... but there is was.  Thanks.

I concur with the + a million

Seems it would be easier for the WDFW to just tell us what we can catch...

Back in 2009 I emailed the WDFW to clarify precisely this issue.  Post #28 in the below thread.  And apparently I owe PolePole a beer :)
